After founder Rick Dunetz's mother was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer, he created the Side-Out Foundation in 2006 to challenge today's cancer care. Focusing on more than just awareness and fundraising, Dunetz and his father hired scientists and formed research teams so they could own, manage, and operate science that actively searches for answers and treatment options for those living with metastatic breast cancer.
A high school volleyball coach at the time of his mother's diagnosis, Dunetz named his foundation for the volleyball term, side-out, which means to regain control of the ball. Dunetz and the Side-Out Foundation started fundraising at volleyball matches across the country, eventually titling these games, "Dig Pink".
Today, the Side-Out Foundation continues to work for a future where breast cancer is not terminal with:
- Research - They host scientists and oncologists to develop treatments for metastatic breast cancer.
- Clinical Trials - They develop personalized clinical trials because everyone's cancer cells are different.
- Advocacy - They work to connect and empower teams and communities. Until breast cancer isn't terminal, the foundation will continue to work on building communities for those living with metastatic breast cancer.
