Coach Rowan: "The score was similar to the draw control differential, and we weren't winning the draws to gain possessions for our team.  Syracuse is a very talented team and we need to take advantage of the opportunities when we could get the ball in our control.  We'll get back to work to prepare for Binghamton."

Playing in their third of four-straight road games, the University at Albany women's lacrosse team visited #3 Syracuse on Wednesday, head coach Katie Rowan's alma mater.  Against the Orange, the Great Danes fell behind early, trailing by eight at halftime, before succumbing 19-7.

 

Syracuse got on the board first, two-and-a-half minutes into the first half.  Four minutes later, Sam Tortora tied the game on a setup from Hannah Newman.

 

Syracuse quickly retook the lead and took command of the game.  The Orange scored 40 seconds later to go up 2-1, sparking a six-goal run over the next nine minutes.  Syracuse led 7-1 with 13:18 remaining, before UAlbany broke the run when Hailey Carroll scored her first of three goals on the evening with 12:03 remaining in the first.

 

After trading each of the next two goals, Syracuse score each of the next three to go up 11-3 with 3:04 left in the first half.  Carroll scored again with 1:00 remaining, but the Orange converted a free position attempt with one second on the first half clock to take a 12-4 lead into the break.

 

Syracuse controlled the tempo in the first half, taking 25 shots while holding UAlbany to just five.  Further, the Orange won 13 draw controls in the first 30 minutes, compared to UAlbany's three.  Carroll scored twice in the first half, and UAlbany goalkeeper Georgia Schneidereith recorded seven saves.

 

Syracuse scored quickly to start the second half to go up 13-4 with 28:44 remaining.  UAlbany scored each of the next two, from Newman and Carroll, before Syracuse rolled off five straight goals over the next 15 minutes, taking a 10-goal lead with 21:04 left and leading 18-6 with 9:36 to go.

 

UAlbany scored once more, with Kyla Zapolski finding net from Abby Stack, before Syracuse scored the final goal of the game to claim victory 19-7.

 

Stats evened up in the second, with the Orange out-shooting the Great Danes 8-5 over the second 30 minutes.  Carroll ended the game leading UAlbany with three goals, while five Great Danes recorded an assist.

 

Next: UAlbany plays its fourth-straight road game on Saturday at Binghamton, before returning home to host Vermont on Wednesday, April 3.
