Coach Brown: “I appreciate the fans coming out tonight knowing the weather was bad.  I feel badly that we weren't able to win on senior night for Devonte and Ray.  We've been Jeckyll and Hyde throughout conference play.  We've seen the good, we've seen the bad.  We had been playing well of late but again, we shot 28% in the second half, 1-10 from three, and finished with five assists.  We had been getting pretty good the last couple of games with our ball movement and our player movement and today the ball stuck.  We bounced it too much, didn't share it enough, and when you're not scoring every defensive possession becomes even more important.  As much as they only scored 62 points I thought we gave up a few easy baskets and got lazy defensively.  But you have to give credit to New Hampshire.  I thought they defended us well and they had some guys step up and make some shots.  They did a great job and we just have to go back to the drawing board and get ready to play a good Hartford team on Saturday.

Recap

The University at Albany men's basketball team hosted New Hampshire Wednesday night in the final regular-season home game of the 2018-19 regular season.  In a brief ceremony before the game, the team honored the two seniors on the roster, Devonte Campbell and Rayshawn Miller, as well as head manager Shane Hammill.  The Wildcats played spoiler Wednesday, ending an 11-game slide to defeat the Great Danes 62-58, snapping UAlbany's three-game winning streak.

Campbell and Miller drew spots in the starting lineup.  Campbell started for the first time since December 18 at Providence, and Miller was put in the starting lineup for the first time this season.

New Hampshire got on the board first, forcing a UAlbany turnover on game's first possession and turning the opportunity into a jumper on the other end.  UAlbany rolled off the next four points before the Wildcats tied the game at four with 17:47 to go.  On UAlbany's next possession, Cameron Healy missed a three, but Campbell collected the rebound for the put-back.

After New Hampshire tied the game at six, UAlbany went on a 6-0 scoring run, while holding the Wildcats scoreless for two-and-a-half minutes of game time.  By the first media timeout, each of UAlbany's starters had contributed two points to UAlbany's 10-6 lead over the Wildcats with 15:06 to go in the first.

UAlbany built its lead to 17-9 with 11:05 remaining in the first before New Hampshire started a small run of its own, bringing the game within four.  Back-to-back threes from Healy and Antonio Rizzuto put UAlbany up 23-17 with 6:30 to go following a three-plus minute scoring drought.

New Hampshire closed within three with 6:19 to go in the first, before UAlbany built its lead back to eight with 5:18 remaining and with 4:13 remaining.  Down by seven with 3:21 left in the half, New Hampshire used a 5-0 run to close the half to cut UAlbany's lead to two, 32-30.

Rizzuto led all scorers at halftime with 11 points on 4-6 shooting, including 3-4 from three.  Both UAlbany and New Hampshire shot an identical 12-24 from the floor in the first half, but the Wildcats had shot just 3-10 from behind the arc where UAlbany had shot 5-11.

New Hampshire took a 35-34 lead with 17:59 left in the second, the team's first since the opening minute of the first half.  The held the lead for the next three minutes of game time, until the Great Danes retook the lead, 38-36, on a three-pointer from Healy.

After New Hampshire tied the game at 38, Kendall Lauderdale put UAlbany up 40-38 with 13:33 left in the second.  Two free throws from Healy less than a minute late put UAlbany up by four, the team's largest lead for the remainder of the game.

New Hampshire used a 5-0 run to take a two-point lead with 9:07 to go in the game.  Lauderdale hit two free throws to tie the game at 46 with 8:44 remaining.  UAlbany would not lead or tie for the remainder of the game.

The Wildcats hit three straight shots to take a 49-46 lead with 8:27 remaining, and further went up six with 5:02 left in the second, prompting a UAlbany timeout.  The Wildcats had hit six of their last eight shots, while the Great Danes had hit just one of their last seven.

With 4:20 remaining, New Hampshire had taken a 59-52 lead, their largest of the night.  UAlbany forced a shot-clock violation out of the final media timeout, leading to two points on the other end.  The Great Danes further cut the lead to three with 1:47 remaining, taking advantage of a three-minute Wildcats' scoring drought.

Two clutch free throws from Ahmad Clark put UAlbany down one with 26.8 remaining.  The Great Danes had scored the last six straight, and had forced three New Hampshire turnovers over the last four minutes of play, during which the Wildcats had not scored.  Four of UAlbany's six points during the run had come from the free throw line, while the Danes struggled to connect from the floor.

UAlbany forced New Hampshire to take a timeout to avoid a five-second violation on the ensuing in-bounds play, and nearly tied the ball up after the break, but sent the Wildcats to the free-throw line instead.  New Hampshire missed the first of a one-in-one, and Campbell grabbed the rebound and pushed the ball up court.  Rizzuto's three-point attempt didn't fall, and New Hampshire secured the rebound and drew a foul to head back to the line.  This time, the Wildcats hit one of two, to take a two-point lead.  Healy's next three missed the mark, and the rebound landed just outside the reach of Malachi De Sousa and out of bounds.  UAlbany fouled and New Hampshire hit two free throws to clinch the game, 62-58.

Healy led UAlbany with 14 points, and shared the lead with Rizzuto with seven rebounds.  UAlbany collectively shot 6-21 from the floor in the second half, including just 1-10 from three.  The Great Danes managed just five assists throughout the game, and committed only three steals while turning over the ball 14 times.  New Hampshire rebounded to shoot 6-12 from three in the second half, and 11-26 overall.

Next: The Great Danes close out the 2018-19 regular season with two games on the road, first at Hartford on Saturday, March 2 and finally at Binghamton on Tuesday, March 5.
