Recap

Senior attacker Emma Powlin's seven goals led a prolific University at Albany women's lacrosse offense Saturday, as the Great Danes began America East play with a 23-5 victory over Hartford at Casey Stadium.

Powlin, who tied for the fifth-highest single-game goal total in program history, was one of 10 different Great Danes to score on UAlbany's best day offensively since a 25-7 win over Manhattan on Feb. 25, 2015.

Freshman midfielder Kendra Harbinger, the reigning America East Rookie of the Week, also scored four goals and Paige Werlau had a hat trick on an afternoon when the Great Danes opened a 14-0 halftime lead over the Hawks, who are competing at the Division I level for the first time this season.

Defensively, UAlbany caused 12 turnovers and held Hartford without a shot on goal in the first half. Sophomore goalkeeper Georgia Schneidereith made four saves in the second half.

Powlin had a hat trick in the first 5 minutes, 13 seconds of the match, helping the Great Danes open a 5-0 lead.

It already was 11-0 with 6:13 left in the half when Kaylee Rickert intercepted a pass near midfield, then raced all the way the cage and beat Hartford's keeper to make it a 12-goal UAlbany lead. Rickert also had three assists in the match for a four-point afternoon.

UAlbany led as much as 19-0 after Paige Werlau scored her first of three goals with 18:08 remaining. She also scored the Great Danes' next two goals, both assisted by Abby Stack, to push the lead to 21-1.

Stack and Kathryn Sancilio both scored their first collegiate goals in the second half, too.
