Lafayette Slips Past Men's Soccer 1-0 in Double Overtime

BOX SCORE
ALBANY, N.Y. – In its fifth double overtime game of the season, the University at Albany men's soccer team (2-3-3) fell 1-0 on Tuesday night to Lafayette. The Great Danes out-shot the Leopards 14-6.
“When you out-shoot a team 14-6 and your keeper only makes one save in 100 minutes, you don't expect to walk off the field a losing team,” said head coach Trevor Gorman, “We have to get ourselves ready to go up against a good Rhode Island team [on Saturday]. We need to sort some things out and not expose ourselves to moments like we did tonight.”
The Purple & Gold kicked off the game with most of their quality looks coming off of corners. Pedro Espindola took a shot that was blocked to set up a corner, but the service from Philip Persson to Anthony Rozzano sent an attempt high. Andres Sandoval also had an early shot sail high on a Persson corner kick.
Persson connected with Dominic McGarr in front of the net in the 20th minute, but the McGarr header was saved. Tim Allen saw his first shot on goal shortly after, but the senior made the save to keep the score tied at zero going into halftime.
Leo Melgar had UAlbany's best look of the second half. The sophomore took a shot from the top of the box, but the attempt into the lower left corner was saved.
The Leopards registered two shots over the next 15 minutes without a look on goal for the Great Danes. With 6:30 remaining in regulation Afonso Pinheiro took advantage of a poor play by Lafayette out of the back, but couldn't quite connect with Persson.
With less than three minutes left in the second half, Luke Palmateer played Persson short on the left side. The junior co-captain beat a Lafayette defender, but his shot from just inside the 18-yard box was blocked. The Leopard back line also blocked a shot from Bernardo Mattos to close out regulation.
Neither team recorded a shot on goal in the first overtime, and the Leopards scored less than two minutes into the second overtime period.
UAlbany men's soccer (2-3-3) hits the road for Rhode Island (4-3-1) on Saturday. The match is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
