STONY BROOK, N.Y.- No. 19 University at Albany women's lacrosse (14-3) held Stony Brook to a 1-1 tie in the first half, but four second-half yellow cards left UAlbany handcuffed in the 7-1 loss.
The Great Danes won the opening draw, and immediately looked to slow the pace against Stony Brook's transition offense. UAlbany held the ball for the first four minutes before earning its first man-up opportunity at the 24:41 mark. Stony Brook's Michelle Rubino was called for a dangerous follow through on a shot to earn the yellow card.
Stony Brook won the ball back, but Allie Phelan came up with the turnover and ground ball to regain possession. Freshman Sarah Martin converted on a free position shot moments later to give UAlbany a 1-0 lead with 22 minutes left in the first half.
After Martin picked up a yellow card of her own, Stony Brook looked to score on the break. First Team All-Conference midfielder Christine Johnson stepped in to force the turnover and prevent the momentum swing.
Dakotah Savitcheff fired a shot looking for a two-goal lead, but a Stony Brook save sent the Seawolves the other way. America East Rookie of the Year Dorrien Van Dyke evened the score at one with 16:25 left in the first half.
With dangerous shot follow-throughs continuing to be a concern for the officials, Ariana Parker had a goal called back and was dealt a yellow card with 10 minutes left in the opening period.
The Great Danes held strong to end the half with a free position stop as the clock expired.
Stony Brook came out with the first goal of the half to go up 2-1, and Parker looked to respond on the other end. Instead the senior was dealt her second yellow card and hence ejected despite scoring what would have been the game-tying goal.
With one of the Purple & Gold's senior leaders out of the game, fellow senior Anna Berman made a big save down the middle to maintain the one-goal deficit.
The Seawolves went on to score five more goals in the second half.
UAlbany was charged with six yellow cards for the first time since a 10-8 loss at Delaware on March 13, 2009. The Purple & Gold's all-time leader in starts and minutes played, Ariana Parker had only received one yellow card in her career prior to the match-up against the Seawolves.
With eight goals combined, the 2014 America East Women's Lacrosse Championship was the lowest scoring tournament game all-time.
John Battaglino's Great Danes will look to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament when the field is announced at 9:00 p.m., on NCAA.com.
