Amherst, Mass. - With doubles by Pete DiResta and Josh Nethaway, along with a solid performance on the mound by Kasceim Graham, UAlbany posted a 9-4 win over Massachusetts in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Minutemen recorded a 5-1 victory in the first game of the day.
In the nightcap, UMass (6-8) scored first, plating one run in the bottom of the second inning. The Great Danes tied the game in the top of the third, as Joey Tracy came home on a Minuteman error. UMass scored a second run in the bottom of the inning, and held onto the one-run lead for the next three innings. After two runs for each team in the seventh, UAlbany exploded for six runs in the top of the eighth. Craig Lepre knocked an RBI single, while Nolan Gaige sent one run home as well, with a base hit to left. A bases-loaded walk to Mike Tirri brought in the third run of the inning, before Nethaway sent a double into left field to clear the bases.
Graham went five innings on the mound with two strikeouts for the Great Danes. Greg Lutton and Travis Wilson each went an inning in relief, with Wilson earning the win. Cameron Sorgie tossed the final two innings for UAlbany, fanning four while allowing just one hit.
UMass scored single runs in the first and third inning of game one, before UAlbany cut the lead in half with a single run scored by Gaige in the fifth. The Minutemen plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth and one in the seventh to set the final score. Each team recorded only three hits, with UAlbany getting one each from Gaige, Tracy and Jeff Welsh.
Starter Sean Lucas took the loss on the mound for the Great Danes, striking out two opposing batters while allowing just two hits. Brian Gauthier and Matt Dybus each saw action in relief, fanning one batter each.
UAlbany (5-18-1) will return to action on Wednesday, visiting Hofstra in non-conference action at 3 p.m.
