Women's Lacrosse Falls to No. 17 New Hampshire in America East Conference Semifinals

Boston, Mass. ? Ashley Durepo scored four goals, all in the first half, in leading New Hampshire to a 17-9 victory over UAlbany in the semifinal round of the America East Conference Tournament on Thursday, April 30 at Boston University's Nickerson Field.  The Wildcats, ranked No. 17 in both national polls, advanced to Saturday's championship for the seventh time in the last eight years.  Boston U., the top seed, defeated Vermont, 18-7, in the first semifinal of the day.

New Hampshire (12-6) scored three times in a 51-second stretch to build an early 4-1 advantage.  Michaela Hardy, who had three goals, converted a free-position attempt that went off a defender's stick and past goalkeeper Katie Neer.  Durepo, a senior midfielder, finished off a pass from behind, before Deb Dale hit an open net after Neer came out to defend a pass after UNH's Shaunna Kaplan won the subsequent draw.

UAlbany (9-8) would close the gap to 5-4 over the next nine minutes.  Mel Rorie, a sophomore midfielder who totaled three goals and one assist, split the top of the Wildcats' defensive zone to find the cage, before Kayla Best was fouled on a drive and connected with the awarded free-position opportunity.

Durepo dodged a defender in front of the cage by moving to her left and Hayley Rausch worked from the left to hit the near top corner to push the lead back to three goals.  The Great Danes got to within 8-6 when Jodi Battaglia spun inside a defender behind the net and fired a shot over the goalkeeper's head from the right.  Durepo regained her team's three-goal cushion by sending a low free-position shot into the net with one second left on the clock before the intermission.

The Wildcats, who avenged a 16-15 upset in Albany during the regular season, took command with three unanswered to start the final period.  Ilana Cohen made a bounce shot off the goaltender's stick on a play that originated off a failed clear.  Kaplan, who tallied one goal and three assists, converted a pass from behind the cage from the left side.  Sarah Von Bargen circled around the cage for the second of her three goals.

The Great Danes, who were making their third consecutive conference postseason appearance, later tried to claw their way back into the semifinal with back-to-back goals that cut the lead to 13-9.  Christine Grueniger stepped inside a defender to score from right of the crease, before Olivia Jarem drove from the top of the box and connected with her left hand.  But UNH came right back when Von Bargen sent a sidearm blast into the net to end the threat.

“UNH played hard, fast and composed,” said UAlbany coach Lindsey Hart, whose team earned its highest tournament seed (No. 2) since joining the league in 2002.  “It was a new situation for us and we had trouble getting ourselves going.  We couldn't get control of the game.”

Dale, a sophomore attacker, added one goal and three assists for the Wildcats, who will be looking to win their first America East championship since 2004.  UAlbany's Grueniger had two goals and one assist.

“We made little mistakes and were not able to gain draw controls and they capitalized on all those opportunities,” said UAlbany defender Sara Wolf, a senior whose squad tied for second in the conference's regular-season standings.  “We were recognized for things that we haven't done before (this season).  We wouldn't have dreamed of those things when I was a freshman.”

Notes:  UAlbany finished with a winning record for the first time since 2000 ... Kayla Best extended her goal-scoring streak to 46 consecutive games ... Mel Rorie tied a career-high with four points (3 goals, 1 assist) ... goalkeeper Katie Neer ended her career with seven saves ... the senior is fourth on the program's all-time saves list with 293 ...
