UAlbany Posts Comeback Win Over Le Moyne in Non-Conference Baseball Action

Albany, N.Y. ? Freshman Mike Tirri hit a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to spark a late-inning comeback and lead UAlbany to an 8-6 win over Le Moyne in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Varsity Field.

The Dolphins scored first, sending one run home in the top of the first, as Matt Nandin crossed home on a groundout by Chris Edmondson. Le Moyne added two runs in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead. Dan Sisto reached on a fielder's choice, sending Rich Brown home. Don Schaaf later drove a single into center field to score Sean Paino, who singled with a bunt earlier in the inning.

UAlbany broke up the shutout in the bottom half of the fifth. With two outs, Pete Eichner doubled into left and was driven home on two-bagger by Gary Pitcheralle. Sean Donovan followed with a single up the middle to score Pitcheralle before reliever Luke Nellis got the final UAlbany batter out swinging. The Great Danes doubled their score to take a one-run lead in the sixth inning. Centerfielder Dave West led off with a single and advanced to second on an error which allowed Jim Banks to reach first. The baserunners advanced on a wild pitch before Tirri drove a single into centerfield, sending the pair home.

Le Moyne regained the lead with three runs in the top of the seventh with back-to-back singles by Paino and Sisto. Brett Botsford knocked a base hit into center to send Paino home before Edmondson drove a triple to right field to score the remaining runners. The Great Danes tied the game up at 6-6 in the bottom half of the frame. Brendan Rowland singled up the middle to send Donovan home and stole both second and third to move into scoring position. He scored on an error by Le Moyne catcher Chris Haynes to complete the scoring in the inning.

UAlbany reliever Jeff Kaier held Le Moyne scoreless in the top of the eighth to give the Great Danes a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the frame. UAlbany loaded the bases with two walks and a hit batter, before Pitcheralle was hit by a pitch to send one runner home. Donovan drew a walk off Le Moyne closer Erik Lambe to send in the final run. UAlbany's Alexander Beaulieu induced a line out and ground out to his first two batters faced before striking out his final batter looking to earn the save.

Kaier earned the win for the Great Danes while Al Ondrako took the loss on the mound for Le Moyne (15-18).

UAlbany (15-21) returns to action over the weekend, visiting Stony Brook for a four-game America East Conference series.
