Boston U. Defeats UAlbany in America East Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship Game

Stony Brook, N.Y. ? Lauren Morton scored four of her five goals in the opening half in leading Boston University to a 17-9 victory over UAlbany in the America East Conference women's lacrosse championship on Sunday afternoon at Stony Brook's LaValle Stadium.  The Terriers, who won their third consecutive conference crown, earned an automatic NCAA berth.

Boston U. (13-5) ran off six unanswered goals to take an 8-1 lead with 4:36 remaining in the first half.  Morton, a junior attacker, scored three times in that stretch.  She drilled a sidearm shot over top of a defensive double-team for a five-goal advantage.  After freshman midfielder McKinley Curro drove from behind the cage to find the net, Morton ended that run by converting a free-position attempt.

UAlbany (8-9) trailed 13-5 with nearly nine minutes elapsed in the second half as the championship's most outstanding player Molly Collins placed a shot inside the right post.  But the Great Danes, who upset top-seed Stony Brook in Friday's semifinal round, scored three straight times over the next 10 minutes.  Rory Redmond connected from in front of the crease, before Christine Grueniger scored 19 seconds later after Kayla Best controlled the draw.  Brittany Scott blasted in a rebound after Kate Fontana's free-position attempt was saved by BU goalkeeper Jenna Golden.

The Great Danes, who were seeded fourth in this tournament, still were within 14-9 when Fontana drove into the middle and rifled a shot into the right side.  However, the Terriers, who shared the conference's regular-season title, put the game away with three goals over a one-minute-and-21-second span.  Freshman Jenny Martin countered Fontana's goal just nine seconds after Curro gained the draw control.  Sarah Dalton and Angie Martin, who had three goals and two assists, padded the margin.

“We started tight where we didn't take care of the ball,” said UAlbany coach Lindsey Hart, whose team made its first-ever championship game appearance.  “Our defensive play kept us in there and we fought throughout the whole game.  Draw controls usually have a bearing on the outcome and they (Boston U.) had that confidence that they were going to come up with the ball.  Our seniors laid the foundation for this program to keep building upon.  We just need to stay focused on that goal.”

Freshman Kayla Best (Guilderland) led the Great Danes with three goals and one assist, while Fontana scored three times, including her 38th of the season.  Goalkeeper Jen Daly, a member of the all-championship squad, made 15 saves.  Curro finished with three goals and two assists for the Terriers, who are ranked No. 20 by Inside Lacrosse and have won nine in a row.  Collins scored twice and added an assist.
