Women's Lacrosse Makes America East Tournament Field in 16-7 Victory Against UMBC

Albany, N.Y. ? Kate Fontana became the school's all-time scoring leader with four goals and two assists in leading UAlbany to a 16-7 America East Conference win over UMBC on Saturday, April 28 at John Fallon Field.  The Great Danes earned the conference's fourth and final postseason tournament berth with the victory.

UAlbany (7-8, AE 3-3) led 7-4 at halftime, but then reeled off eight consecutive goals over a 15-plus minute stretch to pull away.  Fontana, a senior midfielder, placed a free-position shot to the right of goalkeeper Kate Quick before Kayla Best converted a drive from the middle of the field to ignite that decisive run.

Katelyn Primomo gave her team a 10-4 lead when she sent a free-position attempt high into the net.  Fontana, who broke the all-time scoring standard previously held by Maria Ferrucci (2000-03), and now has 189 career points, then drove from the right side, split two defenders, and rifled a shot to the far side of the cage.  Freshman Christine Grueniger delivered a pair of goals, before Stacey Brown completed the outburst by curling inside for a 15-4 cushion with 14:26 remaining.

“The senior class deserves to be in the tournament,” said UAlbany coach Lindsey Hart, who is in her second season at helm.  “They played with confidence and have been getting better and better all year.  We have handle things on a day-to-day basis and learned how to move forward.”

UMBC (7-10, AE 2-4) trailed 4-3 with 10:51 left in the opening half after Jen Kasper spun from the left side around a defender and scored from the edge of the crease.  The Great Danes responded with back-to-back goals.  Erin Fitzmartin's caused a turnover in the defensive half of the field which led to a fastbreak goal by Rory Redmond, who finished off Jane Bush's feed.  Fontana, who has scored three or more goals seven times this season, then beat a couple of Retriever defenders on a drive before sending a blast into the top left corner.

“We had a great week of practice and all the seniors played well today,” explained Fontana, whose team missed last year's America East postseason after qualifying in 2004 and 2005.  “Our offense is working well together.  We feel comfortable with each other, especially our driving and passing.  We were so much faster than they were; we always had one person open.”

Freshman Kayla Best totaled three goals and one assist for the Great Danes, who will play in the conference semifinals on May 4 at the highest seed's home facility.  Redmond and Grueniger each scored twice, while goalkeeper Jen Daly made nine saves.  UMBC's Abbey Swift had two goals, both in the final period.  Kelly Fahey and Kasper each added one goal and two assists.
