Stony Brook Rallies in Late Stages for 17-13 Win Over UAlbany

Stony Brook, N.Y. ? Diana Caroleo scored three goals, all in the final four minutes of play, as Stony Brook rallied for a 17-13 America East Conference victory over UAlbany on Saturday, April 21 at LaValle Stadium. The Seawolves moved into a tie for first place in the conference standings.

UAlbany (6-8, AE 2-3) reversed an 11-9 deficit with four unanswered midway through the second half. Senior midfielder Kate Fontana had three of her four goals in the stretch. Brittany Scott put her team ahead following a turnover, before Fontana found the net unassisted for a 13-11 advantage with 6:39 remaining.

Stony Brook (12-2, AE 4-1) responded with six consecutive goals over a five-minute-and-33-second span in winning for the ninth time in its last 10 outings. Kaitlin Leggio, who had three goals and two assists, tied the contest at 13 apiece when she drilled a free-position shot and converted a turnover into another score. Caroleo, a junior attacker, then went to work with three straight, including the go-ahead goal with 3:54 left.

The Seawolves led 9-7 at halftime as Jenna Celano and Carlee Buck tallied back-to-back 46 seconds apart. Celano and Buck each finished with three goals and one assist. Goalkeeper Jen Sandtorv made eight of her 13 saves in the final period.

UAlbany's Christine Grueniger had four goals and one assist, while Kayla Best scored three times and assisted on another. Fontana , who netted three or more goals in a game for the seventh time this season, moved into second place on the school's all-time scoring list with 183 points. The Great Danes will battle UMBC in the regular-season finale for the fourth and final America East postseason tournament spot on Saturday, April 28 at John Fallon Field.
