Albany, N.Y. ? Kate Fontana had three goals and one assist and Kayla Best scored twice in the second half in leading UAlbany to an 11-9 victory over Vermont in America East Conference play on Saturday, April 14 at John Fallon Field. The Great Danes snapped a three-game losing streak.
Vermont (4-10, AE 1-2) trailed by four at halftime, but then closed the gap to 8-7 over the opening 11 minutes of the final period. Becky Kenison, who did all of her scoring in the second half, had two of her three goals in that stretch. Kenison, a senior attacker, found the net in transition off a feed from Alison Haigh, before Kristen Millar tallied from the top of the crease on pass from behind the cage by Emilie Clark.
UAlbany (6-7, AE 2-2) regrouped by scoring back-to-back goals over the next four minutes. Stacey Brown converted a bounce shot from in front of the cage with 16:04 remaining. Best, a freshman midfielder, followed 39 seconds later when she sent a sidearm shot into the right side of the net on a free-position attempt.
The Catamounts, who were coming off an 18-11 win over conference-rival Binghamton on Wednesday, sliced the lead to two goals when Millar netted her 36th of the season with a blast over the goalkeeper's head in a free-position situation. Best, who totaled two goals and one assist, then pushed the margin up to 11-8 with 5:45 to play. She scooped up a loose ball and scored off a rebound after UVM goalkeeper Meaghan Hanley made one of her 19 saves.
The Great Danes reversed a 2-1 deficit in the opening half by reeling off four unanswered. Fontana , who accounted for all of her points in the period, put her team ahead with a drive in the middle of the field and then switching to her left hand on the finish. Rory Redmond added one of her two goals for a 5-2 advantage. Fontana , who added five caused turnovers, had a hand in a pair of goals over the last five minutes of the stanza. The senior midfielder found the net off a rebound in front of the cage, before setting up teammate Katelyn Primomo, who curled on the inside of the defense.
