Women’s Basketball Falls in Overtime at UMBC

SHORT STORY: UAlbany led for more than 28 minutes and held UMBC to 26.7 percent shooting, but a scoreless overtime swung the result, Saturday afternoon.
 
KEY STATS
  • Sophomore Martina Borrellas led UAlbany with 10 points, five rebounds, and three assists.
  • Sophomore Delanie Hill finished with nine points on three made threes, adding six assists and one steal.
  • Freshman Amaya Stewart totaled seven points and a team-high seven rebounds.
  • UAlbany held UMBC to 26.7 percent shooting and 1-16 from three, but UMBC went 22-27 at the free throw line.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UAlbany opened with the first bucket on a Júlia Palomo Vicente layup, but UMBC used early turnovers to grab an 8-2 lead.
  • The Great Danes steadied the quarter late behind Martina Borrellas on the interior and cut it to 12-11 after one.
  • Delanie Hill drilled a three early in the second, and UAlbany's defense held UMBC to 3-17 shooting in the frame.
  • Amaya Stewart provided a spark inside and at the line, helping UAlbany take a 25-20 lead into halftime.
  • Out of the break, senior Gabriela Falcão finished a steal into a layup and junior Lara Langermann buried a three as UAlbany built its largest lead, going up by 10.
  • UMBC answered with pressure and second-chance looks to trim the margin, but UAlbany stayed in front 36-33 heading to the fourth.
  • Hill hit two more threes in the final period and Langermann scored in transition off a turnover to push the lead to five with just under five minutes left.
  • UMBC held on at the line late and tied it 46-46 on two free throws with 0:37 remaining, sending the game to overtime.
  • In overtime, UMBC held the Great Danes scoreless and closed the extra period on a 9-0 run to take the 55-46 final.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will return home to host their annual Commitment to Education game on Thursday (Feb. 5).
