Women’s Basketball Controls Road Win at NJIT

SHORT STORY: UAlbany never trailed and shot over 50 percent from the field, using balanced scoring and strong execution to earn a decisive America East road victory, Thursday night.
 
KEY STATS
  • Sophomore Delanie Hill led all scorers with 22 points on 9-14 shooting, including three from beyond the arc, while adding four assists.
  • Sophomore Martina Borrellas tallied 16 points on 7-10 from the field with five rebounds and two steals.
  • Graduate student Júlia Palomo Vicente finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, going a perfect 2-2 from three and adding a game-high four steals.
  • Senior Gabriela Falcão recorded 10 assists to guide a UAlbany offense that assisted on 23 made baskets.
  • UAlbany shot 53.8 percent from the field, 46.2 percent from three, and outscored NJIT 38-30 in the paint.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UAlbany established control early with an efficient offense as Delanie Hill and Martina Borrellas combined for multiple paint finishes to spark a quick run.
  • Lara Langermann added a pull-up jumper before Hill knocked down a three off a turnover and converted a fast-break layup to extend the lead.
  • The Great Danes shot 55.6 percent in the quarter and built a strong 22-11 advantage after one.
  • NJIT trimmed the deficit with a short burst to open the second, but Hill responded with a layup and later converted an and-one opportunity.
  • Borrellas scored off a turnover, and Júlia Palomo Vicente added a free throw before Gabriela Falcão finished inside to steady the lead.
  • UAlbany held firm defensively and entered halftime ahead 34-26.
  • Coming out of the break, Borrellas scored on back-to-back possessions and completed a three-point play to push the margin further.
  • Palomo Vicente drained a transition three, and Falcão capitalized on a turnover with a layup as the Great Danes controlled the tempo.
  • UAlbany outscored NJIT 20-12 in the third to take a commanding 54-38 lead into the fourth.
  • Amaya Stewart opened the final frame with a fast-break layup before Palomo Vicente connected from deep to answer on the next trip.
  • Hill buried two fourth-quarter threes, helping the Great Danes stretch the lead to as many as 19 with under two minutes remaining.
  • UAlbany closed the night with perfect free-throw shooting in the final minute to secure the 71-54 road win.
