#18 Field Hockey Takes Season Opener Over Hofstra

SCORE: #18 UAlbany 3, Hofstra 2

SHORT STORY: A fourth quarter goal propelled the Great Danes to a 3-2 win in their season opener against Hofstra, Friday afternoon.
 
COACH PHIL SYKES: "We are a very new team. From our first scrimmage to our second scrimmage and now, we have evolved really well. There is still a lot to work on and I am proud of the team's fight. Hofstra has improved quite a lot over the last few years and they battled hard. I'm glad when we were facing adversity and the score was 2-2, we continued to fight to get that third goal and try to get the win."
 
KEY STATS
  • Junior Pilar Lorenzini led the Great Danes with two goals.  
  • Sophomore Sarah Salameh added a goal of her own. 
  • Olivia Bell was atop the Great Danes with two assists.
  • Freshman Lillian Willis and junior Mara Küskes each followed with one assist. 
  • Each team tallied six shots but UAlbany landed five on goal compared to Hofstra's three. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UAlbany got the scoring started when Pilar Lorenzini netted the first goal of the year on a corner with an assist from Olivia Bell and Mara Küskes less than five minutes into the game.
  • Eight minutes later, Sarah Salameh scored on an assist from Lillian Willis to add on to the Great Danes lead and make it 2-0. 
  • With less than a minute to go in the first quarter, Hofstra was able to score and cut the lead in half to make it 2-1. 
  • Hofstra struck first in the second half and scored on a penalty stroke two minutes into the half to tie it up at two. 
  • The Great Danes scored the last goal of the game early in the fourth quarter when Lorenzini found the back of the net for the second time to make it 3-2, the final score of the game. 
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will take to the road for the first time this season to take on Wagner Sunday (Aug. 31) at 2:00 pm.
