Smisdom Named Woman of the Year Finalist

BOSTON - The America East Conference announced this afternoon that University at Albany field hockey student-athlete Alison Smisdom has been named a finalist for the league's prestigious Woman of the Year award.

Smisdom closed out her career with UAlbany field hockey as one of the best players in program and conference history. The Antwerp, Belgium native finished with 74 goals, 26 assists, and 174 points in four years. She is third in conference history in goals and points - the only UAlbany student-athlete to earn more is Paula Heuser '17. She also holds the conference tournament record with five goals and 10 points in a single game (Maine 11.3.23). In her career, Smisdom has sat atop the conference in goals and points for two years in a row (2023-24). Se

A highly-award athlete, Smisdom started collecting awards as a freshman. Named America East Rookie of the Year, she went on to be named NFHCA First Team All-Northeast Region and Synapse Sports National All-Rookie. As a sophomore, she became just the second Great Danes to earn NFHCA First Team All-American status, a feat she went on to repeat as a junior and senior. Having earned All-American honors three times, she is just one of two to do so - Hueser '17 was a four-time All-American (three-time First Team honoree).

The two-time NFHCA Northeast Region Player of the Year has also been highly awarded for her time in the classroom. The 2022 America East Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete is a three-time Fall At-Large SUNY Scholar Athlete and a two-time member of the AE All-Academic Team. A two-time team captain, Smisdom is a two-time CSC Academic All-District honoree with the chance to make it three times before the conclusion of the 2024-25 athletic year.

The America East Man and Woman of the Year awards recognize the conference's senior male and female student-athletes who have best distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate career in the areas of academic achievement, athletic excellence, service, and leadership. The original nominees represented all nine member institutions.

Now, six student-athletes remain as finalists - three on the men's side and three on the women's side. The winners will be announced next week during the America East banquet on Tuesday, June 3. All finalists can be found below.
