SHORT STORY: Despite two early goals from the Big Red, UAlbany scored three times in the second half for the comeback victory, Sunday afternoon.
KEY STATS
  • Sophomore Jette Kurz led with one goal and one assist.
  • Junior Sarah Salameh and senior Mara Küskes scored a goal each.
  • Küskes added a defensive save.
  • Cornell outshot UAlbany, 16-13, with an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Big Red hit hard and fast with their first goal coming in the fifth minute of action.
  • Adding a second, Cornell held a 2-0 lead after the first quarter.
  • With both teams scoreless in the second quarter, the Big Red held on to its two-goal lead through halftime.
  • After nearly 40 scoreless minutes for the Great Danes, UAlbany scored three times in five minutes of action to take the lead.
  • The first goal came in the 40th minute after an aerial from senior Pilar Lorenzini at the 50-yard line. Jette Kurz collected the pass just outside the circle and almost immediately sent it to Sarah Salameh who one-touched it and shot the ball into the back of the net.
  • Just two minutes later, the game-tying goal came during a penalty corner. After a missed shot from freshman Quinty Reumer, Mara Küskes won the battle for the ball and, with an upright reverse shot, scored the goal.
  • Cornell closed out the third quarter with two consecutive chances using penalty corners. Küskes disrupted the Big Red's chance at a tie with a defensive save just before the buzzer.
  • Not even a minute into the fourth quarter, the Great Danes once again capitalized on a penalty corner to take the lead. After a blocked shot from Reumer, Kurz grabbed the ball, dribbled to look for an open shot and used a tomahawk shot to send the ball into the near corner of the goal.
  • The Big Red matched UAlbany's three shots in the final quarter but it was not enough and the Great Danes secured the comeback victory, 3-2.
NEXT: UAlbany returns home to host Vermont (Oct. 16) and Holy Cross (Oct. 18) for the final full weekend of its regular season. Join the Great Danes as they celebrate their senior class on Sunday (Oct. 18) with a pregame ceremony.
