ALBANY, N.Y. - The University at Albany softball team hosts Siena for a midweek matchup before traveling to Baltimore for a conference series with UMBC this weekend.

LAST WEEK IN REVIEW
  • The Great Danes went 4-0 last week with a doubleheader sweep against CCSU (Apr. 1) and two conference wins against UMass Lowell (Apr. 4). 
  • Redshirt-senior Kate Powers brought home America East Pitcher of the Week honors by pitching 11.1 innings without allowing an earned run with 12 strikeouts, two shutouts, and a save.
  • Redshirt-senior Victoria Vilarchao tallied seven RBI on three hits while slugging one home run to help the Great Danes to a 4-0 week.
  • In the weekend series against UMass Lowell, sophomore Mary Kate Murray added two hits in two games and drove in three runs. 
  • Sophomore Taylor Quinn added three hits of her own while also scoring four runs and driving in two. 
  • As a team, the Great Danes defeated UMass Lowell in five innings (8-0) for game one and closed the doubleheader in seven innings (6-5) for game two.
 
GREAT DANE REWIND
  • UAlbany is currently 15-15 on the season with a 5-2 conference record.
  • After four weekends of tournament play, the Great Danes held a 6-12 record. 
  • Splitting a doubleheader at Army (Mar. 19), UAlbany fell in a doubleheader at Binghamton (Mar. 22) to open conference play.
  • The Great Danes answered by going 4-0 including a series sweep over Bryant for their first home games.
  • Currently on an eight-game win streak, UAlbany went 4-0 last week with doubleheader sweeps at CCSU (Apr. 1) and against UMass Lowell (Apr. 4).
 
AT THE BATTER'S BOX
  • Four Great Danes are leading with a batting average over .300 - freshman Kaitlyn Parisi (.333), senior Caitlyn Frederick (.329), Taylor Quinn (.326) and freshman Ava Beal (.326). All four are ranked top 10 in the conference.
  • A killer on the base paths, Frederick leads the team with 20 stolen bases and 18 runs. Her stolen base total is good for first in the conference - she is leading the runner-up by 10 SB.
  • After a 4-0 week, Victoria Vilarchao leads the team with 18 total RBI. Mary Kate Murrary is close behind with 16. Taylor Quinn (15) and junior Deanna Grahek (13) follow them.
  • Grahek is the only Great Dane to start and play in all 30 contests so far.
  • Both Grahek and Quinn have totaled seven extra-base hits. Grahek has two doubles, two triples, and three homers while Quinn has three doubles, a conference-leading three triples, and one home run. Vilarchao is close behind with six extra-base hits on a team-high four doubles and two home runs.
 
IN THE CIRCLE
  • Three UAlbany pitchers are sharing time in the circle - Kate Powers has 11 starts while freshman Hailey Errichiello has 10 and freshman Hayley Wieczerzak has eight. 
  • Powers leads with seven complete games, including three shutouts, and 72.1 innings pitched. She has a team-low ERA of 2.71, good for second in the conference.
  • Hailey Errichiello is close behind with four complete games, including one shutout, and 59.2 innings pitched.
  • Hayley Wieczerzak has pitched just 45.1 innings but owns the team-high with 67 strikeouts. She has struck out at least 10 batters in two different games this season.
 
2025 WEEKLY AWARDS  
ABOUT SIENA
  • The Saints opened their season in South Carolina at the Charleston Southern Tournament (Feb. 7-9) for a five-game series.They went 5-0 beating the host, Charleston Southern twice (2/7 and 2/8) and Georgetown twice (2/7 and 2/9). They also defeated Bellarmine, 9-8 (2/8).
  • Siena then competed in Florida for seven days (Feb. 21-23, Mar. 5, 7-9). Through 12 contests, the Saints went 3-9 with wins against South Florida (3/5), Central Michigan (3/7), and Chattanooga (3/8). 
  • Returning to the Northeast, Siena swept doubleheaders against Holy Cross (3/15) and Colgate (3/22) while splitting the DH at CCSU (3/20).
  • The Saints opened MAAC play on the road at Quinnipiac and Iona before returning home for non-conference matchups against Dartmouth and Stonehill.
  • Most recently, Siena went 2-0 in a conference contest against Sacred Heart (4/4) and Merrimack (4/9). 
  • Gracie Goeway leads the Saints' offense, hitting .333 with 35 hits, six home runs, six doubles, and 20 RBI while starting in all 35 games.  
  • Two additional active players are hitting over .300 - McKenzie Swinson (.337) with 31 hits and three home runs and Emma Petersen (.321) with 35 hits, one home run, and a team-high 15 doubles. 
  • In the circle, Alissa Eimont has seen the most innings (112.1 IP) with a 3.36 ERA and 83 strikeouts. 
  • Eimont splits time with Kaycie Kennedy who has pitched 80.1 innings with 37 strikeouts and a team-low ERA of 2.88. 
 
SERIES AGAINST THE SAINTS
  • The Great Danes lead the series, 61-16.
  • The two last met in 2023 for a doubleheader in Albany where the Great Danes swept, 4-1 and 8-4.  
  • Morgan Petty recorded three hits in game one and added two more in game two of the doubleheader. She totaled a run scored and two RBI on the day. 
  • In game two, Jordan Nastos added a three-run home run. 
  • UAlbany has won the last seven matchups dating back to 2017.
 
ABOUT UMBC
  • The Retrievers have started the season off 13-21. Three of their wins most recently came from a sweep against Maine in the third week of conference play. 
  • UMBC traveled to Greenville, N.C. to open the season in the East Carolina Tournament (Feb. 14-16) where they started off 1-3. 
  • With three more tournament weekends, including two they hosted - UGA tournament (Feb. 28-Mar. 2), UMBC Round Robin (Mar. 7-9), and the UMBC Round Robin #2 (Mar. 14-16), the Retrievers brought their record to 6-14. 
  • UMBC is 7-2 in America East play after opening conference action with a 2-1 weekend at UMass Lowell (Mar. 22-23), another 2-1 weekend after hosting Binghamton (Mar. 29-30), and sweeping Maine (Apr. 4-5) at Maine.
  • Abby Brenowitz leads the team with a .500 avg, 11 hits, and one double. 
  • Four additional Retrievers are hitting over .300 - Haley Luginbill (.342), Erin Behel (.318), Emily Riggs (.309), and Jerzie Nutile (.300).
  • Phoebe Florian leads the way on the base path with four stolen bases.
  • Jerzie Nutile owns a team-high in home runs with eight while Emily Riggs is close behind with seven of her own.  
  • Kya Matter has spent the most time in the circle with 89.1 innings pitched for a team-low 4.47 ERA. She has struck out 100 batters to lead the Retriver pitchers.
  • Maggie Frisvold has contributed a 4.86 ERA in 53.1 innings pitched while Nutile has added 41.0 innings pitched. 
 
SERIES AGAINST THE RETRIEVERS
  • The Great Danes lead the series, 49-24.
  • UAlbany and UMBC faced off six times in the 2024 season. The Great Danes won four out of six games. 
  • For their first home games of the 2024 season, UAlbany hosted UMBC and won two of the three-game series. Later that season, the Great Danes visited the Retrievers for a doubleheader sweep but UMBC came back to win the final game in the series.
 
PICKED FIRST
  • The Great Danes were picked to finish first in the 2025 America East Preseason Coaches' Poll
  • UAlbany earned 23 points with three first-place votes.
  • Binghamton was close behind UAlbany with 22 points and two first-place votes.
  • Kate Powers and Mary Kate Murray made the first-ever preseason all-conference team.

AROUND THE AMERICA EAST
  • After three weekends of conference play, UMBC leads the conference with a 7-2 record.
  • Binghamton follows behind with a 6-2 record. 
  • UAlbany is on their heels at 5-2. All five wins have come at home.
  • Bryant has fallen to 3-6 after three losses to Binghamton while Maine still looks for their first conference win after nine contests.
