Lee McElroy to be Inducted into NACDA Hall of Fame

CLEVELAND – Former University at Albany director of athletics and vice president, Dr. Lee A. McElroy Jr., is set to be inducted into the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2025, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon.

McElroy joined UAlbany in 2000 as Director of Athletics, serving in that capacity for 14 years before retiring in 2014. He provided leadership to UAlbany's 19 NCAA Division I athletic programs. He came to UAlbany from American University, where he served as director of athletics for four years. Prior to that, he served as director of athletics at California State University, Sacramento.

McElroy is nationally recognized for his work increasing minority representation in coaching, and he has testified before Congress on such issues in college athletics as gender equity, the welfare of the minority student-athlete, and the academic/athletic balance.

McElroy was elected President of NACDA in 2007 and was recognized as the Under Armour Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Northeast Region Athletic Director of the Year. In 2010, McElroy was appointed to the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association Board of Directors. In 2012, McElroy was inducted into the John McLendon Minority Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame as the NACDA representative. During his tenure, McElroy also was named by the NCAA to the NCAA Champions Forum and served on the America East Conference Executive Committee.

During his tenure at UAlbany, McElroy oversaw the growth of the University's athletics programs from Division II to a successful member of Division I, with many programs annually competing for trips to NCAA post season play.  At the time of his retirement, the total number of conference titles under his direction landed at 74 with 31 NCAA post season appearances. Those results included UAlbany joining the America East Conference in 2001 and building a new football stadium, lacrosse field and track and field venue under his watch.
