Victory Over Wildcats Sends Women’s Basketball to the Semifinals

SHORT STORY:
The UAlbany women's basketball team secured their spot in Monday's semifinals of the Jersey Mike's Women's Basketball America East Tournament with a win over eighth-seeded New Hampshire, Thursday night. 
 
COACH COLLEEN MULLEN: "Tonight was a great team win, and I am proud of the way the team responded in the second half. Lilly [Phillips] had a terrific game on the defensive end which helped to create terrific offensive opportunities for the team. We showed tremendous composure and poise in the fourth quarter to close the game."
 
KEY STATS
  • Four Great Danes scored double digits - Lilly Phillips (15), Meghan Huerter (14), Kayla Cooper (12), and Kaci Donovan (11). 
  • Graduate students Jessica Tomasetti and Donovan shared the team-high four rebounds. 
  • Cooper notched three consecutive games with at least five assists as she led the team tonight.
  • Phillips and Donovan tallied a block each while Donovan and freshman Delanie Hill each recorded two steals. 
  • As a team, UAlbany shot 47.1% from beyond the arc, with Phillips shooting 60% and Huerter shooting 57.1%. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • New Hampshire came out strong to gain a 9-4 lead with just under five minutes in the first after a seven-point run.
  • The Great Danes followed with nine unanswered points to end the first quarter on top, 13-9. 
  • Both teams opened the second quarter with three from beyond the arc, but UAlbany was quick to take control with a ten-point run to extend their lead. 
  • The Wildcats found some momentum with 3:21 left in the half and outscored the Great Danes, 9-5, but UAlbany managed to stay ahead and entered halftime with a double-digit lead, 31-21. 
  • New Hampshire kept their momentum from the first half going into the second half and put up six points to the Great Danes' two. 
  • In the last seven and a half minutes of the third, both teams put nine points on the board, but UAlbany kept the lead, 42-36, going into the fourth and final quarter. 
  • The Great Danes dominated the first five minutes of the last quarter and outscored the Wildcats, 17-4. 
  • During the run, Meghan Huerter and Lilly Phillips combined for three buckets from beyond the arc. 
  • To close out the game, UAlbany put up five points which topped New Hampshire's two thanks to a last-minute basket by Laycee Drake.  
  • The Great Danes ultimately outscored the Wildcats, 24-8, in the fourth and took a 66-44 win. 
 
NEXT: UAlbany will host Maine for the semifinal round in the Jersey Mike's America East Women's Basketball Playoffs on Monday (Mar. 10) at 6:30 pm.
