SHORT STORY: The Great Danes will host their first America East Championship game in nearly 10 years after beating #4 Maine in the semifinals, Monday night.
COACH COLLEEN MULLEN: "This was an outstanding win for our program and I am proud of the grit the team showed tonight. Maine has battled adversity all year and we knew they were going to come in inspired for their seniors. I am so happy for our players. They have worked so hard and I'm so happy they get to keep playing together."
KEY STATS
- Kayla Cooper led the team with 16 points, four assists, and eight rebounds.
- Jessica Tomasetti also recorded eight rebounds as well as one assist and one steal.
- Kaci Donovan followed Cooper with 12 points while leading the team with two blocks.
- Freshman starter Delanie Hill totaled a team-high four steals.
- As a team, the Great Danes held Maine to just 15 field goals, including only 16 points in the paint.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Maine gained momentum early and went on a six-point run to kick off the game.
- With just under six minutes left in the quarter, the Great Danes cut into the Black Bears' lead to make the score 9-4.
- To close out the quarter, UAlbany put up two threes to top Maine's one, but the Black Bears kept a 12-10 advantage to go into the second quarter.
- In the first three minutes of the second, the Black Bears continued their rhythm and put seven points on the board while holding UAlbany to two.
- After nearly three minutes without scoring, the Great Danes came back to cut Maine's lead to three with an 8-4 scoring run.
- Down 23-20 to start the second half, UAlbany was quick to even up the board with a three-point play from Kaci Donovan tied the score at 23.
- Maine made a layup to regain a one-possession lead, but the Great Danes came back a minute later with six unanswered points to go up, 29-25.
- Both teams traded points back and forth for the remaining five and a half minutes and scored nine points each.
- Jessica Tomasetti kept UAlbany up by four going into the fourth quarter with a three-pointer at 0:05.
- After almost three minutes without scoring, the Great Danes struck first with two layups.
- Maine answered with five points to make the score 42-39 in favor of UAlbany at 4:56.
- In the last four minutes of the contest, the Great Danes held Maine to two points while securing seven of their own to take a 49-41 win.
NEXT: The Great Danes advance in the playoffs and will host Vermont for the America East Championship on Friday (Mar. 14) at 5 pm.
