Neely Double-Double Paves Way for Men’s Basketball Victory Over Maine

Short Story: The University at Albany men's basketball program took a 79-68 victory over Maine after Justin Neely had a stand-out performance with a double-double and career-high 29 points.

Coach Dwayne Killings: "We came here in what was a huge moment for us to be able to win a game against a team that I would say is arguably the most complete team in the league in terms of how they play... I think the character of our team is growing, the resiliency of our team is growing... we're very capable of winning an America East championship here in a few weeks... We can enjoy the win here for a second, but we've got to get ready and stay on the mission."

Key Stats:
  • Justin Neely led the team with a career-high 29-point game while also tallying a double-double with 11 rebounds. He also owned the team high in steals with three.
  • Amar'e Marshall and Byron Joshua also scored double-digit points: Marshall 18, Joshua 12.
  • Marshall and Joshua also shared the team high in assists with four each.
  • Following Neely, Kacper Klaczek tallied seven rebounds. Both Neely and Klaczek had a block each.

How it Happened:
  • Maine opened the scoring and went up by two at 19:01, but the Great Danes were quick to bite back with two points of their own from Bautista Giralt
  • After two more points for UAlbany that came from DeMarr Langford Jr., the Blackbears went on an 11-point run at 17:36, which put them ahead 13-4.
  • Following a shooting foul, the Amar'e Marshall would be sent to the line and go 2-2 at the line, with his first free throw being the 1,000th point of his collegiate career.
  • For the next seven minutes, the Great Danes outscored Maine 7-6, which put Maine up 19-11 at 9:07.
  • After three from the Blackbears, UAlbany fought back with a 13-point run, which was highlighted by nine points from Justin Neely.
  • In the last 3:47 of the half, Maine outscored the Purple and Gold to go into halftime with a 31-28 lead.
  • The Blackbears dominated scoring during the opening of the first half and found themselves with a 41-32 lead at 17:24.
  • The Great Danes quickly cut Maine's lead to one at 15:15 after an eight-point run that saw Amar'e Marshall earn six points.
  • The Blackbears put up four points before UAlbany answered with a seven-point run that put them on top, 47-45 at 12:09.
  • From 11:54 to 7:03, both teams found 13 points, with the Great Danes still leading 60-59.
  • After swapping points back and forth, Justin Neely scored two for a career-high 27 points, keeping UAlbany ahead 66-63.
  • From 3:06 to the end, the Great Danes outscored Maine 13-15 to take a 79-68 win.
