Volleyball Battles Back to Beat Bryant in Five Sets

SHORT STORY: UAlbany volleyball rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat Bryant in a thrilling five-set match Sunday afternoon at University Gym.

COACH JOSH PICKARD: "This was a great team effort tonight. We played well in the first two but couldn't overcome some bounces. In the last three sets the team really put their play together and were able to go on a few runs. Our grit to keep pushing was the difference today."

KEY STATS

  • Graduate opposite Kendall Harris posted 12 kills, six blocks, and two aces, finishing with 17 total points.

  • Graduate outside hitter Shynelle Woroniuk added 13 kills, 16 digs, and an ace.

  • Redshirt-junior middle blocker Gabriella Karman hit .444 with 8 kills, 7 blocks, and 4 aces.

  • Senior outside hitter Anna Myhal contributed 8 kills, 14 digs, and 2 aces.

  • Senior middle blocker Tori Wilson tallied 9 kills on .389 hitting with 5 blocks.

  • Graduate setter Maria Olga Siapani directed the offense with 41 assists and added 17 digs.

  • Redshirt-junior Brooke Malek led the defense with 17 digs and one ace.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Bryant took control early, using a late run in the opening frame to edge UAlbany 25-22.

  • Despite strong swings from Kendall Harris and Anna Myhal, the Bulldogs capitalized on service pressure to take a 1-0 lead.

  • The second set saw another tight battle before Bryant pulled away late, closing it 25-21.

  • Harris and Gabriella Karman combined for six kills in the set, while Maria Olga Siapani spread the attack efficiently.

  • UAlbany responded in the third, hitting .222 as a team. 

  • Key kills from Shynelle Woroniuk and Tori Wilson kept the momentum alive, and Karman's late block sealed a 25-23 win to extend the match.

  • The Great Danes dominated the fourth set behind a 6-0 serving run from Karman. 

  • Myhal's ace and Harris' timely kills helped even the match with a 25-17 victory.

  • In the decisive fifth, UAlbany raced to an 8-5 lead and never trailed again. 

  • Wilson and Harris combined for three blocks down the stretch, and Karman's final kill clinched the comeback 15-13.
