Volleyball Emerges Victorious After Defeating FDU

SHORT STORY: After defeating FDU Saturday afternoon, the Great Danes made it a winning weekend going 2-1 at home.
 
COACH JOSH PICKARD: "Great work by the team today. We came out strong and took a good lead but then had to battle through the next there to get the win. Overall a good weekend. It was a great feeling to be able to play in front of our home crowd and show them the hard work and dedication that the team has been working so much on."
   
KEY STATS
  • Redshirt-junior Shynelle Woroniuk led among all hitters with 19 kills.
  • Redshirt-sophomore Gabriella Karman was all over the floor with seven kills for a .400 hitting percentage, an ace, and 3.5 blocks.
  • Freshman Maria Olga Siapani had two match-highs with 38 assists and four service aces.
  • The Great Danes had four players with double digit digs - Siapani (12), Woroniuk (11), senior Sthefany Carvalho (11), and redshirt-sophomore Brooke Malek (10).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UAlbany took an early lead after going up, 6-1, thanks to kills from outside hitter Shynelle Woroniuk and opposite hitter Kendall Harris.
  • The Great Danes went up by nine after a four-point scoring run with a block from Woroniuk and middle blocker Gabriella Karman, a kill from Woroniuk, and a service ace from setter Maria Olga Siapani.
  • After a five-point scoring run by FDU, the Purple and Gold responded with a 3-0 scoring run of their own to win the set, 25-17.
  • The Knights got an early lead to begin the second set until the Great Danes went on a four-point scoring run to tie it up at eight.
  • UAlbany scored five in a row with three kills from three different players to go up by four.
  • It was a back-and-forth fight in the end until the Great Danes took the second set, 25-20.
  • UAlbany and FDU started set three the same way they ended set two - going back and forth.
  • After they were tied at 15, the Knights pulled ahead with a three-point scoring run. The Great Danes responded with a scoring run of their own to shorten the lead to one.
  • FDU pulled ahead at the end to win set three, 25-22.
  • The Knights took the energy from their set three win into the fourth set.
  • After FDU took an early lead, the Great Danes stayed in the game but couldn't gain the advantage before the Knights won set four, 25-18.
  • One could feel the energy in the air from the moment the fifth set started.
  • The home crowd was going wild as UAlbany started off hot with a five-point scoring run.
  • The Great Danes extended their lead with a kill from outside hitter Anna Myhal and a service ace from defensive specialist Kiki Provatas.
  • Despite a scoring run from FDU, the Purple and Gold fed off the crowd's energy and took the fifth-set victory, 15-10.
  • UAlbany ended their home invitational with a win, 3-2.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will be heading to Connecticut  next weekend,September 13-14, for the UConn Classic where they will face Dartmouth, Delaware State, and UConn.
