SHORT STORY: The Great Danes closed out their final regular-season tournament with a three-set victory over Coppin State, Saturday.

COACH JOSH PICKARD: "Great effort by the team today. With travel and high-level play, it was very taxing on their bodies [this weekend] and I'm proud of how hard they fought to get the tournament-ending sweep."

KEY STATS
  • Two Great Danes led with double-digit kills. Junior Anna Myhal tallied 17 while redshirt-junior Shynelle Woroniuk followed with 10 kills.
  • A big day on defense, three student-athletes totaled at least 10 digs - freshman Maria Olga Siapani (14), graduate student Elisavet Papageorgiou (13), and redshirt-sophomore Brooke Malek (11).
  • Siapani notched her fifth double-double of the season (34 assists, 14 digs).
  • On the net, junior Tori Wilson compiled a match-high four blocks, including three on her own.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite the 3-0 final score, each set was a closely played game with Coppin State and UAlbany well matched.
  • The first set was a game of small scoring runs - between two and three points each.
  • The Great Danes tallied the first point and it was back and forth from there.
  • Midway through the set, UAlbany would hold the largest lead yet, 15-12, before extending to what would prove to be the largest advantage of the set, 20-16. Coppin State attempted to come back but it was the Great Danes winning set one, 25-21.
  • Similar to the first, the second set started with back-and-forth action until UAlbany gained the largest lead of the contest with an 8-1 run for the 12-5 advantage.
  • All the way up until the final point, the Eagles worked to close the scoring gap.
  • A four-point run from Coppin State put the set within three, 17-14, and a 7-2 scoring run closed the gap even more as the Great Danes were up just one point, 24-23.
  • Shynelle Woroniuk closed out the set with a kill, assisted by Maria Olga Siapani.
  • UAlbany dominated the early part of the set three to gain an 8-2 lead.
  • Coppin State fought its way back to close the scoring gap but one point here and there for the Great Danes was enough to earn the set victory, 25-20, and the match win, 3-0.
