Baseball Readies for Crosstown Matchup Rematch

ALBANY, N.Y. – The UAlbany baseball team will square off against their crosstown rivals, Siena, in a doubleheader on Wednesday at 1 pm.

  • After falling to Army, the Great Danes were swept in a three-game series at Georgetown (3.15-17).
  • Opening conference play, UAlbany split a doubleheader against UMass Lowell (2.22) and then took two games in a three-game set against Maine (3.30-31).

Scouting Siena
The Saints have gone 9-34 this season with a 5-13 conference record.
  • Siena was swept in their first four series by Longwood (2.17-18), Appalachian State (2.23-25), UNC Asheville (3.2-3), and Stony Brook (3.8-9) to start the season.
  • Following a midweek loss to Boston College (3.13), the Saints were swept in a three-game series by Mercer (3.16-17).
  • Defeating Army (3.20) for their first win of the campaign, Siena was then swept by Davidson (3.23-24).
  • The Saints enjoyed a four-game winning streak, defeating Fairleigh Dickinson (3.26) and sweeping Quinnipiac (3.28-29), before falling to UAlbany (4.2).
  • Siena was swept by Rider (4.5-7) and Canisius (4.12-13) but bounced back to defeat Dartmouth (4.17).
  • Losing twice to Niagara (4.19-21), the Saints defeated UMass (4.24) in a midweek contest before being swept at Fairfield (4.26-28).
  • Most recently, Siena lost twice to Manhattan (5.3-4) in their weekend series.  
  • Tyler Figueroa has been a force at the plate, hitting .327 with 12 doubles, 31 RBIs, and seven home runs.
  • Austin Rachiele has slugged a team-best eight home runs and four triples with 26 RBIs.
  • Arnad Mulamekic has been the Siena's ace this season, pitching 48.2 innings with a 5.73 ERA and 1.77 WHIP.

2024 Captains
Will Binder, Connor Eisenmann, and Cregg Scherrer will serve as the captains for the Great Danes during the 2024 season. Binder enters his third season with UAlbany after starting his collegiate career at LaSalle. Since joining the Great Danes, he has started in 89 games and has a .325 batting average. Eisenmann returns to UAlbany for his fourth season. Through 37 appearances for the Great Danes, he has recorded a 5.93 ERA with 121 strikeouts and a .254 batting average against. Scherrer is a redshirt senior from Skaneateles, N.Y., entering his fifth season with the team. Appearing in 44 games, including 34 starts, Scherrer has struck out 195 batters and owns a 5.73 ERA.
 
2024 America East Preseason Poll
  • UAlbany was picked to finish seventh in the 2024 America East Preseason Poll, earning eight points.
  • The Bearcats were picked to finish first in the conference with 35 points, including five first-place votes.
  • Maine, the defending champions, followed closely behind with 31 points and two first-place votes.
  • UMBC (26) placed third, NJIT (19) fourth, and Bryant (18) fifth.
  • UMass Lowell (10) and UAlbany rounded out the poll.
 
America East Standings
Bryant sits on top of the conference table having won 14 games in 18 contests. UMBC is second with an 11-7 record with UMass Lowell trailing close behind having gone 10-10. NJIT and UAlbany both have earned eight wins with NJIT holding the advantage having lost three fewer games. Binghamton has a .389 conference win percentage. Maine rounds out the conference with a 6-11 conference record.
