SHORT STORY: Despite a slow start, the Great Danes pushed ahead to earn a 48-point victory over RPI, Wednesday afternoon.
COACH COLLEEN MULLEN: "This was a team win and it was great to see so many players contribute. As a group, we got better today and were focused on playing our style of basketball. We wanted to execute on both ends in order to grow as a team and I am proud of the way we did that this afternoon."
KEY STATS
- Four Great Danes surpassed 10 points - senior Laycee Drake (17), graduate student Kayla Cooper (16), graduate student Lilly Phillips (14), and senior Meghan Huerter (13).
- Freshman Martina Borrellas led the rebounding efforts with 10.
- Senior Abby Ray totaled six assists to lead while Phillips and graduate student Jessica Tomasetti led in transition with three steals each.
- Ray followed Borrellas with eight rebounds, including a team-high six offensive.
- As a team, the Great Danes shot 49.3% with 37 field goals.
- In both the second and third quarters, UAlbany surpassed 20 points. In the second quarter alone, the Great Danes totaled 31 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After an initial back-and-forth start, the Engineers took a 10-8 lead with 3:38 remaining in the quarter.
- RPI's two-point lead would prove to be their last after Kayla Cooper tied the score at 10 and Laycee Drake gave the Great Danes a two-point lead with a layup.
- Cooper and Drake went on to score again before the end of the first to give UAlbany a 17-10 advantage after 10 minutes of action.
- UAlbany totaled 31 points, including five three-pointers, in the second quarter.
- Kaci Donovan and Meghan Huerter combined for two three-pointers each while Kayla Cooper added two field goals in the first half of the quarter.
- The Engineers defense was able to slow down the UAlbany scoring throughout the next three minutes but three field goals, including a three-pointer from Emma Hákonardóttir, in the final two minutes made it a 28-point contest.
- RPI's Callie Flynn scored a last-second layup to make it 48-22 at halftime.
- The first points of the second half came from the fourth overall possession - a three-pointer from Lilly Phillips at 8:41.
- It was all freshmen for the next three minutes with Delanie Hill and Martina Borrellas combining for three field goals.
- Two jumpers later, the Great Danes had surpassed 60 points with over 14 minutes remaining in the game.
- UAlbany ended the third quarter with seven consecutive points in just over two minutes.
- The Great Danes bordered a 40-point advantage throughout the first half of the final quarter.
- With a 7-0 scoring run in 83 seconds, UAlbany took an 84-38 lead.
- RPI's Sophie Costello added a three-pointer for the Engineers but the Great Danes hit 90 points before the final buzzer for the 48-point victory.
