Men’s Basketball Completes Final Day of Puerto Rico Clasico

Short Story: UAlbany men's basketball competed on the final day of the Puerto Rico Clasico falling to the American Eagles by a score of 81-77.
 
Coach Dwayne Killings: "You've got to go out here and compete. You've got to guard you got to be able to execute… I just didn't think we were as competitive as we could be, which is inexcusable for a group that I think can be a conference champion. But I think we're still learning how hard that is, and how much you must demand yourself to do. 

Key Stats:
  • Justin Neely was UAlbany's leading scorer with 20 points and seven rebounds shooting 7-11 in the field and 6-8 at the line.
  • Byron Joshua recorded 39 minutes of play, receiving 17 points shooting 5-13 from the field, 1-2 beyond the arc, and 6-6 at the free throw line.
  • Four Great Danes recorded one steal.
  • UAlbany shot 27-60 (45.0%) from the field, 4-13 (30.8%) from the three and would go 19-26 (73.1%) at the line.
 
How it Happened:
  • Sully Adewale was the first Great Dane to score in the contest as the Eagle started off the game on a 13-4 run four minutes in.
  • Back-to-back layups a successful And-1 conversion by Kheni Briggs and a field goal from Justin Neely saw UAlbany trail 19-13 with 11:16 to play in the first.
  • Two more field goals from Neely, Amar'e Marshall, and DeMarr Langford Jr. decreased the Purple and Golds' deficit to sic at 31-25.
  • As the first 20 minutes ended, the Great Danes found themselves trailing by nine 39-30.
  • Byron Joshua started off the first half scoring four points in the first three minutes as UAlbany trailed by eight, 42-33, at 17:45.
  • The Purple and Golds' deficit grew to 16 as a three followed by a layup from Aaron Reddish brought it back to an 11-point contest, 57-46 with 11:33 in the second half.
  • Finding themselves down by 20 67-47, UAlbany came bouncing back as Neely recorded four points and a three from Briggs made it a 67-54, Eagles lead.
  • Four points from Joshua would spark a 10-0 run by the Purple and Gold to bring its deficit to within five 75-70 with 1:57 remaining on the clock
  • Joshua would continue to help the Great Danes sinking a three to make it a one-score game 76-64 with 0:31 to play.
  • Following a free throw from Neely, as the score remained within one possession 79-77, with two seconds left on the clock, American would make their final two free throws to come away with the 81-77 win.
