SHORT STORY: The Great Danes ended the 2024 regular season with a 3-1 victory over Vermont to remain undefeated in conference play, Friday afternoon.

COACH PHIL SYKES: "It feels fantastic to end the season undefeated in conference play. It's so challenging in our conference to be consistent against so many good teams. It's been a long time since we've been able to do it. It was a nice goal for our team and to achieve it … it'll help us go into the conference tournament next week with confidence and a good, strong mentality."

KEY STATS
  • Junior Makenna Lowe scored the game-winning goal as three different Great Danes scored.
  • Freshman Tessa Overgoor tallied her first career goal.
  • Senior Alison Smisdom made it 20 goals on the season with the third score.
  • Senior Floor de Ruiter notched the lone assist of the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Floor de Ruiter brought the ball into the circle and took a shot about 10 minutes into the game. After battling for control, she passed the ball between the goal and the goalie.
  • In the right spot at the right time, Makenna Lowe reversed her stick to one-tap the ball into the net for the Great Danes' first goal.
  • With less than four minutes left in the first half, Tessa Overgoor received a pass from freshman Lotje Ligthart and dribbled into the circle. After dribbling for about 15 yards and getting through the defenders, she flicked the ball toward the net to get it through the goalie's legs and into the goal.
  • The third quarter was very defensive as neither team was able to tally a shot.
  • Alison Smisdom added a goal for UAlbany about four minutes into the final quarter. Taking the ball after a foul, she dribbled five yards to get into the circle before taking the shot immediately.
  • Vermont scored an unassisted goal to get the last say and take away the possible shutout with six minutes remaining in the game.

NEXT: The Great Danes are set to host the America East Field Hockey Tournament beginning on Thursday, November 7. UAlbany's first game will be during the semifinal round on Friday (Nov. 8) at 2 pm.
