Vermont Defense Too Much for #14 Field Hockey

SCORE: Vermont 1, UAlbany 0

LOCATION: Alumni Turf - Albany, N.Y.

RECORDS: #14 UAlbany 15-4, 6-0 America East | Vermont 10-8, 3-3 America East

SHORT STORY: Fourth-seeded Vermont upset top-seed UAlbany in the America East semifinal with an early goal and a solid defense, Friday evening.

COACH PHIL SYKES: "Super disappointing. Our girls were very motivated for the tournament and to see what we could. We were beaten by a tough team - Vermont won yesterday and their toughness and ability to grind and keep eating the clock at the end … hats off to them. I know Coach Kate and them have been trying to break through for a long time and this was a big deal for them. I wish them all the best."

KEY STATS
  • Senior Floor de Ruiter tallied a defensive save.
  • Vermont outshot UAlbany, 7-5, with a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UAlbany started early with a shot from graduate student Charlotte Triggs in the first two minutes of action.
  • The Great Danes earned their first offensive advantage on goal during penalty corner in the seventh minute but the Catamounts defense blocked the shot from Floor de Ruiter.
  • Turning it around and gaining possession, UVM's Sophia Lefranc scored her third goal of the tournament for what proved to be the only goal of the game.
  • UAlbany's closest chance at goal came during a penalty corner in the 12th minute of the first quarter. de Ruiter took a shot on goal and it went into the air nearly crossing the goal line but Lefranc swatted the ball out of the air for a Catamounts defensive save.
  • The Great Danes added a corner during the second quarter but it was Vermont's quarter with five shots.
  • UAlbany held possession in its offensive third for most of the second half.
  • After tallying three shots in the third quarter, the Great Danes were held off throughout the entire fourth quarter.
  • Pulling the goalie with 7:54 on the clock, UAlbany closed the game man-up but it wasn't enough to get past the UVM defense and the Catamounts earned the 1-0 victory to advance to the championship.
