SHORT STORY: All eligible players saw the field as the Great Danes defeated Hofstra, 3-0, on the road, Friday afternoon.

COACH PHIL SYKES: "Good team effort today. I liked how we played and problem-solved some tricky situations."

KEY STATS
  • Five Great Danes contributed at least a point.
  • Senior Alison Smisdom led with one goal and one assist.
  • Graduate student Charlotte Triggs and freshman Eva Jenniskens added a goal each.
  • Sophomore Mara Küskes and junior Sophia Schoonmaker each tallied an assist.
  • This shutout victory marked the Great Danes' fourth of the season. It was senior Lara Behn and junior Nina Faupel's second shared shutout.
  • UAlbany outshot Hofstra, 12-1, with a 6-0 advantage in shots on goal. In 2024, this was the third game the Great Dane defense did not allow a shot on goal. It was the second game of the season with one shot or less.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first quarter that saw just two shots, the Great Danes opened the scoring with a penalty corner in the 11th minute of the second quarter.
  • In UAlbany's third corner of the game, Alison Smisdom sent the ball straight into the net with an insert from Mara Küskes.
  • Just three minutes later, Charlotte Triggs and Sophia Schoonmaker combined to extend the lead ahead of halftime. Triggs one-tapped a pass from Schoonmaker to score the goal.
  • For what proved to be the final goal of the contest, Eva Jenniskens tallied her third goal of the season during a penalty corner.
  • Opting out of the direct shot, Smisdom swept the ball from the top of the circle to what looked to be the right side of the goal. Right where she needed to be, Jenniskens tipped the ball over the goalie and into the opposite corner of the net for the score.
  • Nina Faupel joined the game with just under four minutes remaining in the final quarter.
  • UAlbany earned one last shot to extend their lead with a penalty corner in the final minute. Graduate student Delphine Le Jeune and freshman Tessa Overgoor each took a shot but the Hofstra goalie was able to stop both for the 3-0 decision.

NEXT: The Great Danes will return home to host their mental health awareness game against #8 UConn on Sunday (Oct. 6).
