SHORT STORY: The Great Danes fired off at the net to lead to a three-set victory over Sacred Heart, Wednesday night.
COACH JOSH PICKARD: "Great finish before we head into conference play. We played very well at the net today and it showed with our blocking and attacking. Our offense has been very diverse and that's putting a lot of pressure on the opposing side."
KEY STATS
- Gabriella Karman led the Great Danes with eight kills and five blocks for a total of 12.5 points. The redshirt-freshman notched a match-high .583 hitting percentage.
- Redshirt-sophomore Shynelle Woroniuk tallied a team-high 12 kills while sophomore Tori Wilson notched a team-high six blocks.
- Redshirt-sophomore Kendall Harris added five blocks and six kills.
- Junior Sthefany Carvalho led the defense with 15 digs.
- Junior Zosia Szczotkiewicz tabbed 31 assists as the team's primary setter.
- As a team, the Great Danes totaled 22 blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UAlbany jumped to a 4-1 lead early in the first set.
- After Sacred Heart tied the score at four, the two teams battled back and forth until the Great Danes tallied a 7-1 scoring run to take a 19-11 lead.
- Stuck on UAlbany's set point, the Pioneers forced a timeout after five straight points. The Great Danes returned from their timeout to take the next point and the set, 25-19.
- The Pioneers gained an early set in the second set and, despite keeping up, UAlbany was unable to break through for much of the set.
- After SHU earned two straight kills for a 17-13 advantage, the Great Danes took a timeout.
- Play returned to the back-and-forth action until UAlbany tied the score at 23 with four unanswered points.
- Going into extra points for the close set, the Great Danes notched three straight points for the 27-25 win.
- In what proved to be the final set, UAlbany opened with three unanswered points.
- The Great Danes continued with the lead until the Pioneers tallied three straight kills for a 7-7 tie.
- Regaining their lead, UAlbany expanded their advantage to 14-9 with four unanswered points including kills from Shynelle Woroniuk and Kendall Harris.
- The Great Danes furthered their lead to eight points with a 5-0 scoring run.
- Sacred Heart attempted to close the point gap but UAlbany held on and won the set, 25-19, for the match win.
NEXT: The Great Danes are set to start the conference season on the road at NJIT (Oct. 1).
