SHORT STORY: In what proved to be three close sets, the Great Danes fell to host, NJIT, for their first conference matchup, Sunday afternoon.
COACH JOSH PICKARD: "Every match in the America East is important and is good volleyball. We came out flat today and our opponents took advantage. We played hard at times but unfortunately, it was a bit too late in each set."

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Highlanders opened with a 7-1 scoring run in the first set.
- After going back and forth, the Great Danes closed the point gap to 12-10 with five unanswered points.
- Despite a late-set 4-0 scoring run from UAlbany, NJIT won the set, 25-21.
- Opening the second set trading points, the Highlanders gained a 14-4 advantage with eight straight points.
- Battling back with a 12-2 scoring run, the Great Danes tied the set at 21.
- NJIT got the final say with four points to take the second set, 25-22.
- UAlbany started what proved to be the final set with two points.
- Five unanswered points gave the Highlanders a 7-4 lead but the Great Danes answered with a 6-1 scoring run for a 10-8 advantage.
- Trading the lead for much of the final set, the two teams battled until NJIT grabbed four straight points for the slight 22-21 lead.
- Despite an additional two points from UAlbany to tie the set at 22 and 23, the Highlanders took the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-0.
NEXT: The Great Danes will continue the conference season with two home contests against NJIT (Oct. 6) and Bryant (Oct. 8).
