SHORT STORY: The Great Danes started the scoring before adding three in the second half to secure their second conference win against Bryant, Sunday afternoon.
COACH PHIL SYKES: "It was a good team effort on a cold and soggy day. Bryant is a tough team and it was a battle today. We are glad to be 2-0 in conference play."
KEY STATS
- Junior Alison Smisdom led with two goals - both scored during a penalty corner.
- Graduate student Delphine Le Jeune scored a goal from a penalty stroke.
- Redshirt-junior Jannelle Volk scored the first goal of her career.
- Freshman Mara Küskes tallied two assists.
- As a team, the Great Danes outshot Bryant, 15-6, with an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first quarter, Delphine Le Jeune opened the scoring with a successful stroke as 5:08 was on the scoreboard in the second quarter.
- Bryant tied the game about six minutes into the second half.
- With just eight seconds left in the third quarter, Alison Smisdom scored the go-ahead goal off a penalty corner. Taking an insert from Mara Küskes and a stick-stop from junior Blanca Orsola, Smisdom sent the ball into the net from the top of the circle.
- Scoring two goals in a four-minute time span, the Great Danes took a 4-1 lead in the final quarter.
- About three minutes after Smisdom added a second goal off a corner, Jannelle Volk intercepted a pass at the top of the dotted circle. Dribbling all the way to the goal, Volk dumped the ball into the net for what proved to be UAlbany's final goal.
- The Bulldogs got the final say with the last goal to make it a two-goal decision, 4-2.
NEXT: The Great Danes will return home for a Friday afternoon contest against Maine (Sept. 29).
