SHORT STORY: The Great Danes kept up with the Billikens while taking one set but were unable to earn the match win, Saturday afternoon.
COACH JOSH PICKARD: "We definitely saw some positives this weekend against good competition. We also saw areas of our game that need attention. The pre-conference schedule throws a lot of competition at us and we have to get prepared for a quick turnaround this week."
KEY STATS
- Redshirt sophomore Shynelle Woroniuk led the Great Danes with 14 kills and 34 receptions.
- Senior Elisavet Papageorgiou topped the defense with 13 digs.
- Sophomore Tori Wilson notched a team-high four blocks, including one solo block, while freshman Emilia Kuzniar added three blocks.
- Kuzniar served as the starting setter totaling 31 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Billikens earned a multi-point lead early in the first set.
- UAlbany grabbed a 5-1 scoring run to tie the set at 12.
- Trading points for much of the mid-set action, Saint Louis pulled ahead with an 8-2 scoring run before taking the 25-18 set victory.
- The Great Danes flipped the switch and grabbed the first two points in the second set.
- Settling close behind SLU, the Great Danes traded points with their opponent until the Billikens tallied five unanswered points to take a 16-10 lead.
- Back-and-forth action followed but UAlbany was unable to close the gap and Saint Louis took the 25-19 set win.
- Much like the first two, the third set started neck-and-neck.
- After six unanswered points, the Great Danes held a 13-8 advantage.
- The Billikens tied the score and took a one-point lead with six straight points.
- A final 9-2 scoring run put the set in UAlbany's hands with a 23-17 advantage.
- The Great Danes closed the set with a 25-19 victory.
- An early 10-1 scoring run put the set out of reach for UAlbany and gave Saint Louis an 11-3 lead.
- Although play returned to its previous normal of back-and-forth action, the Billikens were able to hold on to their lead to win, 25-11, and take the match, 3-1.
NEXT: The Great Danes will head to St. John's for a midweek matchup on Tuesday, September 5.
