SHORT STORY: The UAlbany volleyball program played its first match of the Ellis Rowland Memorial Tournament Friday night, falling in straight sets to the host Colgate Raiders.

COACH JOSH PICKARD: "We talked a lot after the match about execution.  The team is working really hard but unfortunately, we aren't seeing the results.  Little plays here and there are piling up to a bit too much.  We are still early in the season and I'm excited about the investment that every member of the team is putting in."

KEY STATS HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Colgate opened the first set on a 3-0 run, kicked off by a kill from Greta Hoogstra.  UAlbany's first point came on a Colgate service error.  After Colgate went up 4-1, UAlbany rallied to tie the first set at four points apiece.
  • The Great Danes tied the set at five, before Colgate went on a 6-1 run to go up 11-6.  UAlbany rallied again to close within two, 11-9, before Colgate started to rebuild its first-set lead.
  • The Raiders maintained a five-point lead through the latter part of the first set, and ultimately pulled away to win set one by double-digits.
  • UAlbany won the first point of the second set, and held a 2-1 lead, before Colgate won the next four points.  The Great Danes clawed back within two, 7-5, before Colgate won each of the next five points to lead by seven.
  • Colgate closed the second set on a 7-4 run to take a two-set lead.  Despite dropping the set, the Great Danes recorded more kills, 10-9, than the Raiders, in set two, and recorded 12 more total attacks.
  • UAlbany had its best start of the evening to open the third set, initially taking a 3-0 lead.  Colgate rallied to tie the set at three, but UAlbany ended the Raiders' run to lead 4-3 early.
  • Colgate took a 5-4 lead, and began to pull away, before UAlbany close back within one, 7-6.
  • The Raiders began to take command of the decisive set, scoring each of the next eight points.  UAlbany closed within seven but Colgate pulled away once more to win the final set 25-15 and claim victory in the match.
NEXT: The Great Danes will continue the invitational with Cornell and WVU on Saturday (Sept. 9).
