SHORT STORY: The Great Danes and the Big Red played an even game to a final result after two overtime periods. Close until the end, UAlbany took the win, 3-2, over Cornell, Sunday afternoon.
COACH PHIL SYKES: "I am very proud of our team today. We fought through a lot of adversity just to get to [overtime]. Both of our goalies were a big part of the win today against a very tough Cornell team."

- Junior Alison Smisdom scored both UAlbany goals in regulation.
- Junior Floor de Ruiter and freshman Mara Küskes tallied one assist each.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Great Danes started the scoring in the first quarter with 0.0 on the clock.
- UAlbany extended the period earning three penalty corners in a row before their offensive push resulted in a goal from Alison Smisdom. Passing to Floor de Ruiter and then back to Smisdom, the junior took the shot from about three yards in the circle for the first goal of the contest.
- Cornell tied the game at one with just under two minutes left in the half.
- For the second time in as many quarters, the Great Danes got ahead with a goal showing 0.0 seconds on the clock.
- With two penalty corners at the end of the second quarter, UAlbany's Smisdom took a shot from off center at the top of the circle, after receiving an insert from Mara Küskes, for the score.
- After a scoreless third quarter, the Big Red tied the game score in the 12th minute of the final quarter.
- In the first overtime period, the Great Danes held a slight advantage in shots, 2-1, but the period saw most of its action in the midfield.
- Kicking up the pressure in the second overtime period, Cornell outshot UAlbany, 4-0, but the Great Danes were able to hold on and head to shootouts.
- The first four shootout attempts were goals. With two from the Purple and Gold (de Ruiter and Küskes), the score was tied at 2-2.
- The next attempt for each team was a miss before the Great Danes earned the advantage after a miss from the Big Red and a successful attempt from senior Charlotte Triggs.
- Cornell's final attempt was a goal so it was up to the final Great Dane - graduate student Delphine Le Jeune - to score for the win. With a dodge of the goalie and a push towards the net, Le Jeune's shootout attempt was a success and the Great Danes notched the win, 3-2.
NEXT: The Great Danes continue on the road against Towson (Sept. 16) and Drexel (Sept. 17).
