SHORT STORY: The Great Danes came from behind to tie the score and go into overtime against UMass but it was not enough as the Minutewomen took the double overtime victory, Friday.
COACH PHIL SYKES: "It was a tough game today against a very good UMass team. I was proud of how we battled back after being down 2-0. These early games teach us a lot and we will learn and grow from this."
KEY STATS
- For the third year in a row, senior Charlotte Triggs scored a goal against UMass.
- Triggs led the team with two goals.
- Junior Alison Smisdom assisted both goals.
- The Minutewomen outshot the Great Danes, 12-9, with a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal.
- UAlbany held a 5-2 advantage in penalty corners.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The scoring did not start until the second half.
- A scoreless first half saw UMass hold the advantage in shots, 6-2, with five shots in the first quarter alone.
- Just over a minute into the third quarter, the Minutewomen opened scoring with an unassisted goal off a rebound.
- Advancing their lead, UMass added a second goal halfway through the quarter with 7:24 on the clock.
- Just two minutes later, the Great Danes scored their first goal of the season. Continuing their corner prowess, Charlotte Triggs tipped in a shot from Alison Smisdom at the top of the circle.
- UAlbany emptied the net with four minutes remaining in regulation.
- Triggs scored the Great Danes' second goal on a tip from a drive from Smisdom.
- After a scoreless overtime with just two total shots, one from each team, a second overtime period started.
- One minute and 38 seconds into the second overtime period, the Minutewomen earned a corner. Securing a goal from the corner, UMass took the season-opening win.
NEXT: UAlbany will continue opening weekend at home with Stonehill on Sunday (Aug. 27) at 2 pm.
