#19 Field Hockey Welcomes UMass, Stonehill

ALBANY, N.Y. - The UAlbany field hockey team is set to open the 2023 campaign hosting UMass and Stonehill for a full weekend of competition.
 
On Sunday (Aug. 27), the Great Danes will celebrate the 2022 season with a championship ring ceremony before the game begins.

GREAT DANE REWIND
  • UAlbany returns to action after a historic 2022 season that saw the Great Danes' second program appearance in the NCAA Tournament Second Round.
  • The Purple and Gold ended the regular season with five straight wins after losing just four contests in a 17-game regular season.
  • Earning a bye with the second seed in the America East Tournament, the Great Danes defeated New Hampshire in the semifinal before taking down Stanford in shootouts for the league title.
  • Ranked 16th in the nation, UAlbany headed to fourth-seed Michigan for the NCAA First Round contest. Down by one after a Wolverines' goal in the first half, the Great Danes tied the score with less than three minutes on the game clock. UAlbany took the overtime upset after Sophia Schoonmaker scored the game-winning goal with 55 seconds left in the first overtime period.

ABOUT UMASS
  • The Minutewomen return to action after having finished the season 14-6 and 6-1 in the A10 conference.
  • UMass saw their season end at the A10 Championship after having defeated Lock Haven in the semifinals.
  • Competing against first-seeded Saint Joseph's, the Minutewomen fell, 3-0.

SERIES AGAINST THE MINUTEWOMEN
  • UAlbany has the advantage in the all-time series, 6-4.
  • Most recently, the Great Danes defeated 18th-ranked UMass in a double-overtime contest on October 16, 2022. Current junior Blanca Orsola scored the game-winning goal, assisted by current senior Charlotte Triggs.
  • Two years ago, in a 2021 contest, the Minutewomen snapped a four-game win streak with a 2-1 decision. Triggs scored the lone UAlbany goal as a sophomore.
 
ABOUT STONEHILL
  • Their first year of Division I field hockey saw the Skyhawks finish 3-12 overall and 1-6 on the season. 
  • Ineligible for postseason competition, Stonehill ended the season with a win over Queen's University on Senior Day.

  • This will be the first meeting between UAlbany and Stonehill.
