GREAT DANE REWIND
  • UAlbany opened the 2023 season in Conway, South Carolina at the Chanticleer Showdown (Feb. 24-26) before heading to the Spring Games at Madeira Beach (Mar. 3-5).
  • In a slow start to the season, the Great Danes tallied a 1-4 record at Coastal Carolina. Earning a win over Mount St. Mary's (2.25), UAlbany fell twice to host Coastal Carolina and Saint Joseph's.
  • At the Spring Games, the Great Danes worked for two shutout wins over LIU (3.3) and Georgetown (3.4) but fell to Southeastern Louisiana (3.3), Creighton (3.4), and MTSU (3.5).
  • In their final tournament of the season (Mar. 18-19), UAlbany went 2-1 with wins over Lafayette and a loss to the host, Mount St. Mary's.
  • Returning home, the Great Danes hosted Siena (3.22) for a doubleheader sweep. 
  • UAlbany opened conference play with a doubleheader sweep over UMass Lowell (3.26) before splitting a doubleheader at Maine (3.31)
  • Continuing conference play, the Great Danes fell 1-2 in a three-game series at Binghamton (Apr. 8-9) before seeing that same record against UMBC (Apr. 15-16).
  • Adding two midweek doubleheaders, UAlbany split both at Army (4.5) and against Syracuse (4.12).
  • The Great Danes went 3-1 with two doubleheaders throughout the week of April 17. After splitting at Hartford (4.20), UAlbany swept Bryant with two five-inning shutout victories (4.22).
  • Visiting UMass Lowell for their final regular-season road series. UAlbany split the doubleheader before falling in the rubber game on Saturday, April 29.
  • Most recently, the Great Danes hosted Binghamton for a senior weekend sweep (May 5-6). After taking each of the Friday doubleheader games, 4-3, UAlbany closed out the three-game series with a final 4-3 win on Saturday.
 
AT THE PLATE
  • Starting all 39 games, senior Morgan Petty leads the team with a .418 batting average from a team-high 51 hits, including five doubles, four triples, and six home runs, for 33 RBI.
  • Senior Caitlyn Mitros follows with a .356 batting average.
  • Leading with nine doubles and 32 runs, junior Jordan Nastos also owns 25 RBI with a runner-up 43 hits, including three home runs.
  • Senior Maddi Petrella follows Petty with 26 RBI while adding five home runs.
  • In addition to Petty, Petrella, and Nastos, sophomore Sierra Fretz has hit four home runs and graduate student Chloe Lewis has tallied one for UAlbany.
  • Five Great Danes have totaled at least one double, one triple, and one home run - Petty (five 2B, four 3B, and six HR), Fretz (five 2B, one 3B, and four HR), Petrella (two 2B, one 3B, and five HR), Nastos (nine 2B, one 3B, and three HR), and senior Wendi Hammond (two 2B, one 3B, and one HR). 
  • Senior Caitlyn Mitros has hit two triples with freshman Deanna Grahek adding one triple.
  • Grahek (4), Lewis (4), senior Schuyler Ossman (2), Mitros (1), freshman Sara Anderson (1), freshman Kasey Conn (1), and redshirt-freshman Maya Thompson (1) round out the multi-base hits with their respective totals in doubles.
 
IN THE FIELD
  • Chloe Lewis leads the defense with 207 putouts.
  • Deanna Grahek leads with 70 assists with Sara Anderson (65) following behind.
  • Ten Great Danes have contributed to at least one double-play. Grahek leads with 12 and Lewis follows with 11. Jordan Nastos has six, Anderson has five, and Sierra Fretz has four while redshirt-sophomore Kate Powers and Maddi Petrella follow with three and two, respectively. Wendi Hammond, Maya Thompson, and sophomore Christie Collins round it out with one each.
  • All five Great Dane pitchers have seen the circle.
  • Hammond has seen the most time with 137.2 innings pitched and 72 strikeouts. She has pitched 14 complete games, including four shutouts, and one save with 23 starts for a 3.25 ERA and an 12-9 record in the circle. Recently, she pitched a complete-game shutout in which she struck out a season-high nine batters and allowed just one hit and one walk against Bryant.
  • Powers saw her first collegiate no-hitter in a six-inning victory over Maine. Leading with a 3.08 ERA, she has pitched 84.0 innings with 44 strikeouts in seven complete games, including two shutouts, for an 8-5 record in the circle. Recently, she pitched a complete-game shutout in which she allowed just two hits and one walk against Bryant.
  • Sophomore Amelia Freitas has totaled two starts while pitching 20.2 innings for a 1-2 record in the circle.
  • Lewis and senior Adian Sheeren have a combined 12.2 IP and six strikeouts.

ABOUT #1 UMBC
  • The Retrievers are 23-15 on the season, with a 15-4 record in the America East. After earning an 8-9 non-conference record, UMBC began conference play.
  • Hosting Bryant (3.26) and Binghamton (April 1-2), the Retrievers opened with five wins - a doubleheader sweep over the Bulldogs and a three-game weekend series sweep over the Bearcats.
  • Continuing play, UMBC went on the road to split weekend series against UMass Lowell (April 7-8) and UAlbany (April 15-16) with two wins and one loss in each series.
  • The Retrievers closed out the year with three-straight series - a sweep over Maine (April 22-23), a doubleheader split at Bryant (4.29), and a senior weekend 2-1 split over UMass Lowell (May 5-6).
  • Throughout conference play, UMBC saw a loss to Towson (4.12) and Maryland (4.19).
  • Ashley Della Guardia leads the team with a .330 batting average, nine doubles, seven home runs, and 23 RBI.
  • Madison Wilson is tied with 23 RBI from 30 hits, including four doubles and six home runs.
  • All but one of UMBC's active players have totaled at least one home run. 
  • Kya Matter has seen the most time in the circle, pitching for 119.2 innings and eight complete games. She has totaled 116 strikeouts for a 12-5 record and a 1.87 ERA. 
  • Courtney Coppersmith leads UMBC pitchers with a 1.85 ERA. Totaling 104 strikeouts in 68.0 innings pitched, she has tallied five complete games, five saves, and six wins.
  • In the field, Lyndsey Evix leads with 217 putouts while Shanel Stott has tallied a team-high 43 assists.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE RETRIEVERS
  • The Great Danes lead the series, 46-20.
  • Earlier in the 2023 season, UAlbany split the three-game weekend series, 1-2. Earning a 2-1 win in the second game of the doubleheader, UMBC took the series in an eight-inning game on April 16.
  • The Great Danes and the Retrievers met in the 2022 championship tournament twice. After a 1-0 loss to UMBC, UAlbany made it to the championship game in which the Retrievers won, 4-0.
 
ABOUT #2 BINGHAMTON
  • The Bearcats are 29-16 on the season with a 13-7 record in the America East. After compiling an 11-7 non-conference record, Binghamton started league play hosting Maine for a doubleheader sweep (3.26).
  • After three losses at UMBC (April 1-2), the Bearcats hosted UAlbany for a 2-1 weekend (April 8-9).
  • Binghamton went on to sweep two three-game series against UMass Lowell (April 21-22) and Maine (April 29-30). The Bearcats closed the regular season with three losses at UAlbany (May 5-6).
  • Throughout conference play, Binghamton saw a single-game win over Cornell (3.28), a doubleheader split against Siena (4.6) and Syracuse (4.19), and a doubleheader sweep over Army (4.25).
  • Lindsey Walter leads with a .416 batting average while Brianna Santos leads with 39 RBI and 13 doubles.
  • Alli Richmond owns a team-high five home runs and Sarah Rende leads with three triples.
  • Seeing a team-high 96.2 innings pitched, Brianna Roberts has struck out 100 batters with six complete games, one shutout, two saves, and 11 wins in 16 starts. Close behind, Sophia Pappas has 91.1 innings in the circle with 103 strikeouts, five complete games, one shutout, two saves, and six wins in eight starts.
  • In the field, Hailey Ehlers leads with 233 putouts while Akira Kopec owns a team-high 56 assists. As a team, the Bearcats have totaled seven double plays.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE BEARCATS
  • The Great Danes lead the Division I series, 53-14.
  • Earlier in the 2023 season, UAlbany and Binghamton met for two three-game series.
  • In the first (April 8-9), the Great Danes traveled to Vestal and fell, 2-1, with one 5-2 win in the second game of the doubleheader.
  • UAlbany closed out the regular season with a weekend sweep over the Bearcats (May 5-6). In each of the three games, the Great Danes earned a 4-3 win.
  • The last tournament meeting between the two teams was in 2019. The Bearcats took a 6-2 victory on May 9.
 
ABOUT #4 UMASS LOWELL
  • The River Hawks are 20-27-1 on the season with an 8-12 record in the America East. After earning an 8-13-1 non-conference record, UML started conference play at UAlbany in a doubleheader loss on March 26.
  • Splitting their next three series against Bryant (March 31-April 1), UMBC (April 7-8), and Maine (April 15-16). The River Hawks won the series against the Bulldogs and the Black Bears but fell against the Retrievers.
  • After losing a sweep at Binghamton (April 22-23), UML won the weekend series at UAlbany, 2-1 (April 28-29) and fell in the series at UMBC, 1-2 (May 5-6).
  • Throughout conference play, UMass Lowell played for a doubleheader split against Merrimack (3.29), two losses against Boston University (4.4), and a doubleheader sweep over Stonehill (4.25).
  • Morgan Fisher leads the team with a .333 batting average, 10 doubles, and 37 RBI.
  • Cayla Tulley is close behind with 35 RBI and owns a team-high eight home runs.
  • Ryley White leads the pitchers with a 2.55 ERA, tallying eight complete games with 93.1 innings pitched. Notching an 8-6 record in the circle, White has totaled 91 strikeouts and five shutouts.
  • Giana LaCedra has seen the most time in the circle with 112.2 innings pitched and 10 complete games. With 17 starts, she owns a 10-6 record with 61 strikeouts and three shutouts.
  • In the field, Katelyn Fitzgerald leads with 204 putouts while Mya Case has tallied a team-high 92 assists. The River Hawks have 14 double plays on the season.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE RIVER HAWKS
  • The Great Danes lead series, 21-20.
  • Earlier in the 2023 season, UAlbany and UMass Lowell met on two occasions.
  • The Great Danes took a doubleheader sweep to open the conference season (3.26).
  • In their final road trip, UAlbany fell, 1-2, against the River Hawks. The Great Danes took the second game of the doubleheader (4.28) before UML won the rubber game, 6-2, on April 29.
  • The last tournament meeting between the two teams was just last year (2022). The Great Danes tallied two victories - 6-5 on May 12 and 5-3 on May 13.
 
ABOUT #5 BRYANT
  • The Bulldogs are 18-27 on the season with a 6-12 record in the America East. After totaling a 7-11 non-conference record, Bryant started conference play with two losses at UMBC (3.26).
  • Splitting two weekend series at UMass Lowell (1-2, March 31-April 2) and against Maine (2-1, April 8-9), the Bulldogs fell in a three-game series against Binghamton (April 15-16) and a doubleheader against UAlbany (4.22).
  • After splitting a doubleheader against UMBC (4.29), Bryant took a 2-1 record against Maine in its final regular-season weekend (May 5-6).
  • Throughout conference play, the Bulldogs split a doubleheader against Brown (3.28), fell in a game against URI (4.4), fell in a doubleheader against Siena (4.12), swept a doubleheader against Stonehill (4.18), and won a single-game against Merrimack (4.25) and Holy Cross (5.3).
  • Aleix Hudson leads active players with a .327 batting average while totaling nine doubles and three home runs.
  • Megan Marcel owns a team-high four home runs and 26 RBI and Hannah Cochran has notched a team-high 10 doubles.
  • Kylie Kenney has seen the most time in the circle with 123.0 innings pitched. Seeing 10 complete games and 20 starts, she owns a 12-10 record in the circle with 128 strikeouts and one save.
  • In the field, Marcel leads with 201 putouts while Hudson has tallied a team-high 62 assists. As a team, the Bulldogs have eight double-plays.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE BULLDOGS
  • The Great Danes lead the all-time series, 9-5.
  • UAlbany swept a doubleheader against Bryant on April 22. With two shutout five-inning games, the Great Danes earned a 9-0 win and an 8-0 win.
  • UAlbany last saw the new America East member in 2016 with a 15-2 victory in five innings.
  • The first matchup between the two teams was in 2009. It was a 2-0 shutout victory for the Great Danes.
 
ABOUT #6 MAINE
  • The Black Bears are 13-37 on the season with a 4-15 record in the America East. After grabbing a 7-18 non-conference record, Maine began the conference season falling in a doubleheader at Binghamton (3.26).
  • After splitting a doubleheader against UAlbany (3.31), the Black Bear split a three-game series against Bryant (April 8-9) and UMass Lowell (April 15-16).
  • Both UMBC (April 22-23) and Binghamton (April 29-30) swept the weekend series over Maine before the Bulldogs closed the season with a 2-1 split over the Black Bears (May 5-6).
  • Throughout the conference season, Maine played for a doubleheader loss against URI (4.10) and Boston University (4.18) and a doubleheader sweep over Stonehill (4.26).
  • Grace McGouldrick leads the team with a .338 batting average from 45 hits.

  • In the field, Izzy Nieblas leads with 262 putouts while Krista Francia has tallied a team-high 116 assists. As a team, the Black Bears have 14 double plays.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE BLACK BEARS
  • The Great Danes lead the series, 37-14.
  • Earlier in the 2023 season, UAlbany split a doubleheader against Maine (March 31). The third meeting in the 2022 series was canceled due to weather.
  • The last tournament meeting between the two teams was in 2017. Playing three games in three days, the Great Danes ended with a 6-1 victory for the America East Championship Title on May 14.
