Softball Hosts Binghamton for Senior Weekend

ALBANY, N.Y. - The University at Albany softball team is prepared for their final regular-season series against Binghamton.
 
Ahead of the final home game on Saturday, the Great Danes will honor the senior class in a ceremony celebrating all they have accomplished in the last four (or more) years. The ceremony will begin approximately 15 minutes before first pitch.

GREAT DANE REWIND
  • UAlbany opened the 2023 season in Conway, South Carolina at the Chanticleer Showdown (Feb. 24-26) before heading to the Spring Games at Madeira Beach (Mar. 3-5).
  • In a slow start to the season, the Great Danes tallied a 1-4 record at Coastal Carolina. Earning a win over Mount St. Mary's (2.25), UAlbany fell twice to host Coastal Carolina and Saint Joseph's.
  • At the Spring Games, the Great Danes worked for two shutout wins over LIU (3.3) and Georgetown (3.4) but fell to Southeastern Louisiana (3.3), Creighton (3.4), and MTSU (3.5).
  • In their final tournament of the season (Mar. 18-19), UAlbany went 2-1 with wins over Lafayette and a loss to the host, Mount St. Mary's.
  • Returning home, the Great Danes hosted Siena (3.22) for a doubleheader sweep. 
  • UAlbany opened conference play with a doubleheader sweep over UMass Lowell (3.26) before splitting a doubleheader at Maine (3.31)
  • Continuing conference play, the Great Danes fell 1-2 in a three-game series at Binghamton (Apr. 8-9) before seeing that same record against UMBC (Apr. 15-16).
  • Adding two midweek doubleheaders, UAlbany split both at Army (4.5) and against Syracuse (4.12).
  • The Great Danes went 3-1 with two doubleheaders throughout the week of April 17. After splitting at Hartford (4.20), UAlbany swept Bryant with two five-inning shutout victories (4.22).
  • Most recently, the Great Danes visited UMass Lowell for their final regular-season road series. UAlbany split the doubleheader before falling in the rubber game on Saturday, April 29.
 
AT THE PLATE
  • Starting all 36 games, senior Morgan Petty leads the team with a .416 batting average from a team-high 47 hits, including five doubles, four triples, and six home runs, for 32 RBI.
  • Senior Caitlyn Mitros follows with a .361 batting average.
  • Leading with nine doubles and 29 runs, junior Jordan Nastos also owns 24 RBI with a runner-up 41 hits, including three home runs.
  • Senior Maddi Petrella follows Petty and Nastos with 23 RBI while adding four home runs.
  • In addition to Petty, Petrella, and Nastos, sophomore Sierra Fretz has hit four home runs for UAlbany.
  • Five Great Danes have totaled at least one double, one triple, and one home run - Petty (five 2B, four 3B, and six HR), Fretz (four 2B, one 3B, and four HR), Petrella (two 2B, one 3B, and four HR), Nastos (nine 2B, one 3B, and three HR), and senior Wendi Hammond (two 2B, one 3B, and one HR). 
  • Senior Caitlyn Mitros has hit two triples with freshman Deanna Grahek adding one triple.
  • Grahek (4), graduate student Chloe Lewis (3), senior Ossman (2), Mitros (1), freshman Sara Anderson (1), freshman Kasey Conn (1), and redshirt-freshman Maya Thompson (1) round out the multi-base hits with their respective totals in doubles.
 
IN THE FIELD
  • Chloe Lewis leads the defense with 183 putouts.
  • Deanna Grahek leads with 69 assists with Sara Anderson (57) and Jordan Nastos (45) following behind.
  • Ten Great Danes have contributed to at least one double-play. Grahek leads with 12 and Lewis follows with 10. Jordan Nastos has six, Anderson has five, and Sierra Fretz has four while Maddi Petrella and redshirt-sophomore Kate Powers have tallied two each. Wendi Hammond, Maya Thompson, and sophomore Christie Collins round it out with one each.
  • All five Great Dane pitchers have seen the circle.
  • Hammond has seen the most time with 126.2 innings pitched and 66 strikeouts. She has pitched 13 complete games, including four shutouts, with 21 starts for a 3.26 ERA and an 11-9 record in the circle. Recently, she pitched a complete-game shutout in which she struck out a season-high nine batters and allowed just one hit and one walk against Bryant.
  • Powers saw her first collegiate no-hitter in a six-inning victory over Maine. Leading with a 3.12 ERA, she has pitched 74.0 innings with 41 strikeouts in six complete games, including two shutouts, for a 6-5 record in the circle. Recently, she pitched a complete-game shutout in which she allowed just two hits and one walk against Bryant.
  • Sophomore Amelia Freitas has totaled two starts while pitching 20.2 innings for a 1-2 record in the circle.
  • Lewis and senior Adian Sheeren have a combined 12.2 IP and six strikeouts.
 
2023 AMERICA EAST WEEKLY AWARDS  
ABOUT BINGHAMTON 
  • The Bearcats are 29-13 on the season with a 13-4 conference record.
  • Starting the season 1-4 at the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament (Feb. 10-12), Binghamton evened out their record with four wins and one loss at the Furman Tournament (Feb. 17-19). 
  • In their final tournament, the Bearcats added four wins at the Hampton and Norfolk State Tournament (Mar. 4-5).
  • After falling in a doubleheader at George Mason (3.11), Binghamton tallied five-straight wins with doubleheader sweeps over George Mason (3.12) and Maine (3.26) and a single game at Cornell (3.28).
  • The Bearcats continued conference play falling in all three games at UMBC (Apr. 1-2).
  • Before hosting and winning a home series against UAlbany (Apr. 8-9), Binghamton split a doubleheader at Siena (4.6).
  • Since hosting the Great Danes, the Bearcats have lost just one game in a doubleheader split against Syracuse (4.19).
  • Before going against the Orange, Binghamton visited Bryant for a series sweep (Apr. 15-16).
  • Starting with the second game in the Syracuse doubleheader, the Bearcats swept a three-game series over UMass Lowell (Apr. 21-22), a doubleheader against Army (4.25), and a three-game series at Maine (Apr. 29-30) to earn a nine-game win streak.
  • Lindsey Walter leads with a .448 batting average, from 47 hits, and 31 runs.
  • Laney Harbaugh owns a team-high 49 hits with a .333 batting average.
  • Brianna Santos leads with 10 doubles and 39 RBI while adding two triples and three home runs.
  • Sarah Rende is tied with 10 doubles and holds a team-high three triples while adding three home runs and 26 RBI.
  • Owning a team-high four home runs, Alli Richmond has notched nine doubles and 26 RBI.
  • In the circle, Brianna Roberts leads with 93.0 innings pitched, 96 strikeouts, and a 2.48 ERA. Earning an 11-2 record, the freshman has 15 starts with six complete games, including one shutout, and two saves.
  • Sophia Pappas follows with 80.1 innings pitched, 89 strikeouts, and a 2.70 ERA. Earning a 6-5 record in the circle, she has six starts with four complete games, including one shutout, and two saves.
  • Walter and Allison L'Amoreaux follow with about 40 innings in the circle. Walter has seen 41.0 innings in six starts with two complete games and two saves. L'Amoreaux has totaled 37.1 innings pitched with nine starts and two complete games, including one shutout.
  • In the field, Hailey Ehlers owns a team-high 221 putouts and Akira Kopec leads with 53 assists.
  • As a team, the Bearcats have notched seven double-plays.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE BEARCATS 
  • The Great Danes lead the Division I series, 50-14.
  • Earlier this season, Binghamton won a three-game series, 2-1, at home (Apr. 8-9). 
  • Morgan Petty and Maddi Petrella each tallied an RBI in a game one 4-2 loss (Apr. 8).
  • In game two, Kate Powers earned the complete-game win with two RBI from Petty and Sierra Fretz each and Sara Anderson adding the fifth in a 5-2 victory (Apr. 8).
  • The Great Danes fell in a close game three, 3-2, with Caitlyn Mitros and Petty tallying an RBI each. Petty gave UAlbany a lead in the sixth inning with a home run.
  • In 2022, the Great Danes swept a midweek doubleheader over Binghamton on April 13.
  • Petty scored a two-run homer on the way to a 5-2 game one victory before earning a 12-2 game two five-inning win.
 
PICKED THIRD
  • The Great Danes were picked to finish third in the 2023 America East Preseason Coaches' Poll. 
  • UAlbany tallied 17 points and no first-place votes.
  • UMBC topped the poll with 35 points and five first-place votes while UMass Lowell followed with 20 points and one first-place vote. 
  • Binghamton, with 16 points, grabbed the final first-place vote. Bryant and Maine tied for fifth with seven points.
 
AROUND THE AMERICA EAST
  • UMBC holds a slight lead with a 13-3 record.
  • Binghamton is tied with 13 wins but is just behind the Retrievers with four losses.
  • UAlbany rounds out the teams with a winning record - 8-7.
  • UMass Lowell is in fourth place with a 7-10 record.
  • Bryant (4-11) holds the slight edge over Maine (3-13) with their respective records.
