Baseball Travels South to UMBC

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany baseball team is set to travel to Baltimore, Md., for a three-game conference series against the UMBC Retrievers. Action starts on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. from Alumni Field.  

Fans should note that Saturday's game time has been changed from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Leading the Pack 
  • Will Feil enjoyed another strong week at the plate. The UAlbany captain batted .467, going 7-15 with three doubles and a home run. The redshirt senior collected a team-high eight RBIs and a team-high four walks. ON the season, Feil is batting .298 and leads the team in doubles (9) and home runs (7).
  • Danny Alvarez is coming off an impressive week, playing in three games and going 4-7 at the plate. Two of his hits went for extra bases.
  • Will Binder leads the team in both at-bats (156) and hits (46). He's batting .295 with a .772 OPS and a .410 slugging percentage. He sits second on the team with five home runs.
  • Jason Bottari ranks top-five in the conference with 23 stolen bases. The speedster has had success getting on base, ranking second on the team with a .426 OBP.
  • Redshirt Freshman Matthew Mariano has adjusted seamlessly into his new role as a starter. In his last outing, Mariano went seven strong innings while allowing just one run on six hits en route to a win over Binghamton.
  • As a team, UAlbany is batting .248 with a .706 OPS and a .350 SLG%. The pitching staff sits with an 8.16 ERA, with opposing teams batting .338.
 
Last Time Against UMBC
UAlbany and UMBC last let in late March, with the Retrievers sweeping the three-game series. The games were the first of the year at UAlbany's Varsity Field. The Retrievers took both games of a Friday doubleheader, 10-8 and 14-7, before completing the sweep with a 13-9 win on Sunday.
 
Scouting UMBC
The Retrievers enter the weekend with an overall record of 24-23, having gone 13-8 in conference play thus far. UMBC took the opening two games of last weekend's series at Maine before falling in the final game and dropping two midweek matchups against Towson and Delaware State.
  • Tony Krueger leads the team with a .347 batting average, totaling 51 hits, nine doubles, 31 RBIs, and 24 walks.
  • Luke Johnson has been a force on the mound, sitting second in the conference with a 3.06 ERA and a 6-1 record.
  • As a team, UMBC is batting .289 with an .830 OPS and a .435 SLG%. The pitching staff holds a 6.74 ERA with opposing batters batting .280.
 
2023 America East Preseason Poll
The UAlbany baseball team was picked to finish seventh in the 2023 America East Preseason  Coaches' Poll, earning nine points. The Binghamton Bearcats, the league's defending champions, were picked to finish in first place with 31 points, collecting four first place votes. UMass Lowell followed closely behind with 28 points and two first place votes. Bryant (25) placed third, Maine (21) fourth, and NJIT (19) fifth. UMBC (14) and UAlbany rounded out the poll.
 
2023 Captains
Will Feil and Jason Bottari will serve as the Captains of the Great Danes during the 2023 season. Feil, a redshirt senior, enters his fifth year with the program – having joined before the 2019 campaign. He has been a mainstay for the Great Danes, playing in 35+ games the last two years. Bottari, also a redshirt senior, enters his fifth season as well. He currently holds the UAlbany single season stolen base record (44) and has more stolen bases than any other Great Dane in program history.
