Baseball Set for Weekend Series at St. John’s

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany baseball team is set to travel to Queens for a weekend showdown with St. John's. First pitch of game one is scheduled for Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. from Kaiser Stadium.
 
Fans should note that game one's original start time was changed from 3:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. due to the possibility of rain later in the day.

Leading the Pack
  • Junior Outfielder Dan Tauken has been hot for UAlbany. IN his last three games, the Congers native has tallied seven hits, including a double and two home runs, and has driven in seven RBIs. He currently leads the team with a .421 batting average and a 1.384 OPS.
  • Will Feil, the team's captain, sits with a .296 batting average and a team-high 11 RBIs. He drove in three runs on Wednesday's game at CCSU, two of which cam on bases-loaded walks. He has eight hits, including two doubles and two home runs, in 27 at-bats, adding on a team-high nine walks.
  • Jason Bottari, Feil, and Tauken all lead the team with eight runs scored.
  • Chris Fisher has played in and started in six games for UAlbany, sitting second on the team with a .350 average. He's collected seven singles and four RBIs, crossing home plate six times.
  • Cregg Scherrer leads the UAlbany starting pitchers with a 5.40 Era in two games started. He is followed by Connor Eisenmann with a 6.23 ERA.
  • Matthew Mariano made his first collegiate start on Wednesday at CCSU. The redshirt freshman tossed three innings of one hit ball, not allowing a run.
  • As a team, the Great Danes sit with a .255 batting average, .756 OPS, and a .364 slugging percentage. The pitching staff sits with a combined 7.74 ERA with opponents batting .327.

UAlbany cruised to its first win of the 2023 season on Wednesday afternoon, 16-3 over CCSU.
  • Matthew Mariano threw three innings while only giving up one hit in his first collegiate start.
  • Six UAlbany pitchers combined to not give up a single earned run.
  • Dan Tauken finished with three hits, including a double, in five at-bats with a walk. He collected three runs and two RBIs.
  • Will Feil finished with three RBIs to lead the team, two of which came on bases loaded walks. He finished 1-3 at the plate with two runs scored.
  • Will Binder finished with two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored.
  • Danny Alvarez went 1-1 with two RBIs.
  • Jason Bottari showed discipline at the plate, drawing four walks and scoring twice.

Scouting St. John's
The Red Storm come into the weekend series with an overall record of 7-4, having won five of their last six. The team took two out of three on the road at Marshall this past weekend before taking down Hofstra at home on Wednesday afternoon.
  • Graduate student Aaron Mann leads the team with a .429 batting average to go along with 18 hits. He's hit two doubles and a home run, tallying seven RBIs and 12 runs scored.
  • Marty Higgins (.400) and David Glancy (.244) both lead the team with 10 RBIs each. They each have a team-high two home runs this year, tied with Tate Ballestero (.270) and Paul Orbon (.412).
  • IN 11.1 innings pitched, starter Nick Cirelli sports a 1.59 ERA with 14 strikeouts. Joe Mascio follows with a 4.61 ERA over a team-high 13.2 innings pitched, collecting 17 strikeouts.
  • The team is batting .272 with an .801 OPS and a .420 slugging percentage. The pitching staff sits with a 5.63 ERA with opponents batting .238.  
 
2022 America East Preseason Poll
The UAlbany baseball team was picked to finish seventh in the 2023 America East Preseason Coaches' Poll, earning nine points. The Binghamton Bearcats, the league's defending champions, were picked to finish in first place with 31 points, collecting four first place votes. UMass Lowell followed closely behind with 28 points and two first place votes. Bryant (25) placed third, Maine (21) fourth, and NJIT (19) fifth. UMBC (14) and UAlbany rounded out the poll.
 
2023 Captain
Will Feil will serve as the Captain of the Great Danes during the 2023 season. Feil, a redshirt senior, enters his fifth year with the program – having joined before the 2019 campaign. He has been a mainstay for the Great Danes, playing in 35+ games the last two years.
