Softball Set for Mount St. Mary's Tournament

ALBANY, N.Y. - The University at Albany softball team is set to resume their schedule with their final tournament at Mount St. Mary's.

GREAT DANE REWIND
  • UAlbany opened the 2023 season in Conway, South Carolina at the Chanticleer Showdown (Feb. 24-26) before heading to the Spring Games at Madeira Beach (Mar. 3-5).
  • In a slow start to the season, the Great Danes tallied a 1-4 record at Coastal Carolina. Earning a win over Mount St. Mary's (2.25), UAlbany fell twice to host Coastal Carolina and Saint Joseph's.
  • At the Spring Games, the Great Danes worked for two shutout wins over LIU (3.3) and Georgetown (3.4) but fell to Southeastern Louisiana (3.3), Creighton (3.4), and MTSU (3.5).
  • Tallying 11 hits, including one double and one home run, senior Maddi Petrella leads the team with a .393 batting average.
  • Leading with six RBI from 10 hits, including two doubles and one homer, senior Morgan Petty is closed behind with a .333 batting average. Petty also owns a team-high four stolen bases.
  • Pitching four complete games, senior Wendi Hammond has seen 35.1 innings in the circle with 18 strikeouts and two complete game shutout wins. Sophomore Amelia Freitas, senior Adian Sheeren, and graduate student Chloe Lewis have also spent time in the circle.
  • In the field, junior Jordan Nastos leads with 26 putouts while freshman Deanna Grahek leads with 14 assists. Two Great Danes are left without an error on the field - sophomore Sierra Fretz and Petrella.
  • Seven Great Danes have contributed to at least one double-play. Grahek leads with four while Fretz, Nastos, and Lewis follow with two each. Petrella, Hammond, and sophomore Christie Collins have tallied one each.
 
ABOUT MOUNT ST. MARY'S
  • After playing three tournaments and a couple of midweek games, the Mount is 8-11 on the season.
  • Starting the season at the Chanticleer Showdown (Feb. 25-26), the Mountaineers notched a 2-2 record before earning one win and four losses at the Ole Miss Classic (Mar. 3-5).
  • Mount St. Mary's added three losses with midweek games against Virginia Tech (3.7) and UMBC (3.8).
  • Most recently, the Mount hosted a doubleheader against North Dakota for two wins after going 3-1 in their first home tournament of the season (Mar. 11-12).
  • Mariah Godde leads the team with a .333 batting average while Maggie Kane owns a team-high nine RBI.
  • Tallying the lone triple of the season, Abigayle Perry is close behind Kane with eight RBI from 13 hits, including two doubles, one triple, and two home runs.
  • In the circle, three pitchers have seen over 30 innings pitched - Avery Neuhart leads with a 1.51 ERA while Maddie Coleman (2.46 ERA) and Olivia Murphy (2.65 ERA) follow.
  • Murphy holds the team-high 22 strikeouts but Neuhart (20) and Coleman (13) follow closely.
  • In the field, Kaia Bonshock owns a team-high 113 putouts and Maggie Kane leads with 38 assists.
 
ABOUT LAFAYETTE
  • Three weeks into action, the Leopards own a 1-13-1 record on the season.
  • Starting at the 37th Annual Louisiana Classic (Feb. 10-12), Lafayette opened the season with five losses before earning their first, and only, win at the UMBC Retriever Round Robin (Feb. 25-26).
  • Despite a weekend opening win over Youngstown State (2.25), the Leopards added three losses to close the weekend.
  • Playing seven games at the Spring Games at Madeira Beach, Lafayette saw six losses and ended the week with a tie against Iona (3.14).
  • Harlie Bickett leads the team with a .293 batting average and 11 hits, including two doubles.
  • With eight hits, including three doubles, Kylee Sweet owns a team-high three RBI.
  • In the circle, each active pitcher has pitched for two complete games. Jacqueline Cal leads with a 3.92 ERA while Morrigan Gardiner leads with 17 strikeouts.
  • In the field, Megan Coyle has tallied a team-high 59 putouts while Kalli Reitano leads with 26 assists.
 
PICKED THIRD
  • The Great Danes were picked to finish third in the 2023 America East Preseason Coaches' Poll. 
  • UAlbany tallied 17 points and no first-place votes.
  • UMBC topped the poll with 35 points and five first-place votes while UMass Lowell followed with 20 points and one first-place vote. 
  • Binghamton, with 16 points, grabbed the final first-place vote. Bryant and Maine tied for fifth with seven points.
 
AROUND THE AMERICA EAST
  • UMBC leads the conference with an 8-5 record.
  • Binghamton is the only other team with a winning record - 11-7.
  • UMass Lowell has won its last two games for a 6-9-1 overall record.
  • UAlbany is currently in fourth with a 3-7 record after two weekends of play.
  • Bryant (4-11) and Maine (5-15) round out the conference.
