#18 Field Hockey Remains Undefeated in Conference Play, Clinches Postseason Bid

SHORT STORY: One goal proved the difference as the Great Danes defeated Stanford and extended their win streak to five, Sunday afternoon.
 
COACH PHIL SYKES: "Fantastic effort today. I know Stanford is always a very tough team and this was a big game. We were trying to stay in a good position to have a good draw for the America East tournament and I know they were fighting for a potential [bid] … they were in a desperate place and we had to play our A-game. I am so very proud of our team today. So many things we've been working on at practice are starting to show in the games and it is fun to watch."

  • Junior Isabella Del Vecchio scored the only goal.
  • Junior Floor de Ruiter recorded an assist.
  • Junior Alison Smisdom tallied her second defensive save of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UAlbany applied pressure early before gaining its first penalty corner in the sixth minute.
  • The Great Danes maintained their momentum and recorded seven shots in the first quarter.
  • The Cardinal looked to open the scoring at the end of the first quarter but Smisdom made a defensive save to keep the scores leveled.
  • Isabella Del Vecchio tipped in a Floor de Ruiter pass for a goal with 3:13 on the second-quarter clock. Sitting outside the circle, de Ruiter passed to Del Vecchio who was just in front of the goal.
  • Not allowing a shot in the third quarter, UAlbany possessed a 3-0 shot advantage.
  • Stanford emptied the net with over three minutes remaining.
  • The Cardinal possessed the ball within their offensive 25 yard-line but the Great Danes held on for the 1-0 victory.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will head on the road to face UMass Lowell on Friday (Oct. 13).
