SHORT STORY: The Great Danes and the River Hawks traded goals throughout the contest but it was UMass Lowell taking home the Friday evening win.
COACH PHIL SYKES: "Tough one today. It was a very competitive game and [UMass] Lowell played with a lot of enthusiasm. They were up for it today and deserved the win."
KEY STATS
- With two goals and two assists, four Great Danes put points on the board.
- Junior Isabella Del Vecchio and redshirt-junior Jannelle Volk scored a goal each.
- Juniors Floor de Ruiter and Lauren Willis each contributed an assist.
- The Great Danes outshot the River Hawks, 11-8, with a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The River Hawks scored first with just over a minute left in the first quarter.
- Scoring a collective three goals in five minutes, UAlbany and UMass Lowell entered halftime tied at two.
- Isabella Del Vecchio scored the Great Danes' first goal with 5:13 on the second-quarter clock with an assist from Floor de Ruiter.
- Under four minutes later, the River Hawks got the go-ahead goal.
- With just one second left in the first half, Jannelle Volk tied the score. Taking a short pass from Lauren Willis, Volk dribbled the ball from the top of the circle to create a shot and score a goal.
- UML notched what proved to be the final goal, and the game-winning goal, in the third quarter.
- The Great Danes battled in the fourth with three total shots and four minutes in a man-up situation but they were unable to score and tie the game as the River Hawks took the win.
NEXT: UAlbany returns home to host #3 North Carolina for a Sunday afternoon contest.
