SHORT STORY: The Great Danes battled in four close sets, including two that went into extra points, but it was the visiting Sharks taking the match win, Tuesday night.
COACH JOSH PICKARD: "Very close match tonight. We are finding ourselves on the wrong end of two-point sets lately. I appreciate Anna [Myhal] stepping into the libero role and Gabi [Karman] for her career high in kills."
KEY STATS
- Redshirt-freshman Gabriella Karman and redshirt-sophomore Kendall Harris led the team with 13 kills each.
- The redshirt-freshman made it into the double-digits for the first time in her collegiate career with a team-high .571 hitting percentage.
- Serving as the libero for the first time, sophomore Anna Myhal totaled a career-high 20 digs.
- Junior setter notched 40 assists while following Myhal with 15 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Great Danes gained an 8-3 lead with two three-point scoring runs.
- After LIU closed the point gap to just one, 9-8, UAlbany furthered its advantage with a 5-1 scoring run.
- The Sharks took a 19-18 lead after a 7-1 scoring run.
- Battling back and forth, the set finished in LIU's favor, 25-23.
- In a close second set, the first three-point lead came after four unanswered Great Dane points with UAlbany holding an 18-13 advantage.
- LIU closed the point gap but the Great Danes were able to gain back a multi-point lead before taking the set, 25-20. UAlbany's one winning set had the largest point differential of the night.
- Returning to back-and-forth action, the Great Danes once again held the first three-point lead of the third set, 14-11.
- The Sharks took the lead, 17-16, with three straight points but UAlbany answered with a mini scoring run of their own, 21-19.
- After trading points to get to 24-23, UAlbany, LIU grabbed three unanswered points to take the set, 26-24.
- In what proved to be the final set, the Great Danes gained a significant advantage, 14-9, with a 7-1 scoring run.
- Trading points for much of the remainder of the set, UAlbany continued with the lead up until its 24th point, 24-21, when the Sharks answered with three straight points to tie the set at 24.
- Despite one last point from the Great Danes, LIU closed out the set, and the match, with another three-point scoring run.
NEXT: The Great Danes will continue at home with their final home match of the 2023 season - New Hampshire (Nov. 5).
