Volleyball Falls in Four-Set Match

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes earned a decisive first set but Binghamton won three close sets to take the four-set win, Friday evening.
 
COACH JOSH PICKARD: "Great start to the match tonight but, unfortunately, we couldn't sustain that pressure throughout. We were able to spread our offense but unable to get past a tough block"
 
KEY STATS
  • Redshirt-sophomore Shynelle Woroniuk (15) and sophomore Anna Myhal (14) combined for over half of the Great Danes kills.
  • Junior Sthefany Carvalho led with 17 digs.
  • Myhal followed Carvalho with 12 digs for her second double-double on the season.
  • Freshman Gabriella Karman tallied a team-high four blocks.
  • Close behind with three blocks, junior Zosia Szczotkiewicz served as the primary setter with 44 assists. She added 11 digs for her third double-double of the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Binghamton grabbed the first point but UAlbany quickly made up for it with five unanswered points.
  • Adding three straight points, the Great Danes took an 8-2 lead.
  • Play continued back and forth until the Bearcats closed the lead to four points, 16-12, with four straight.
  • UAlbany gradually extended the point gap before taking the set win, 25-18, with three straight points.
  • Opposite of the first set, the Great Danes scored the first point before Binghamton gained a 3-1 lead with three unanswered points.
  • Play returned to back-and-forth action until UAlbany took an 8-7 lead with four straight points.
  • The lead traded teams as the Great Danes and the Bearcats continued play. 
  • A 6-0 run late in the set sealed the victory for Binghamton and tied the match at 1-1.
  • Returning to the back-and-forth action of the earlier sets, a three-point run gave the Bearcats an 8-3 lead in the third set.
  • UAlbany answered to tie the score at eight with five straight points.
  • The Great Danes took their first lead of the third set, 14-13, with a 4-1 scoring run.
  • Binghamton returned to a multi-point lead, 20-17, after six unanswered points.
  • The teams traded points for the remainder of the set until the Bearcats took the 25-22 win.
  • In what proved to be the final set, Binghamton earned a 10-7 lead with the first, and only, scoring run of the set. 
  • The remainder of the set proved to be back-and-forth action but it was not enough as the Great Danes fell, 25-19, for a four-set loss.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will continue on the road with Bryant on Sunday (Oct. 29).
