Field Hockey Readies for First Split Weekend

ALBANY, N.Y. - The UAlbany field hockey team continues its home slate, and begins its road campaign, with a split weekend.

GREAT DANE REWIND
  • UAlbany opened the season with an explosive 5-2 victory over Northeastern. It was the Great Danes' first win in the all-time series against the Huskies.
  • Facing #22 Ohio State in a closely played game, the Great Danes fell in their second game of the season for a 1-1 record on the weekend.
  • Tallying two goals and one assist against Northeastern, sophomore Alison Smisdom leads the team with five points.
  • Sophomore Blanca Orsola and freshmen Sophia Schoonmaker combined for one goal and one assist each.
  • Graduate student Elaina Burchell added a goal while senior Robyn Murray and junior Charlotte Triggs notched an assist each.
  • Sophomore Lara Behn started both of the weekend's games tallying 105 total minutes. Senior Hannah Mangan came in for the final quarter against Ohio State.
 
ABOUT #11 PENN STATE
  • The Nittany Lions opened the season with a 3-2 win over Virginia before following it up with a 2-1 loss against Louisville.
  • With a tied score, Sophia Gladieux put the ball in the net with less than a minute left in regulation against Virginia. Overall, she leads the team with two goals and one assist.
  • Jemma Punch and Meghan Reese added a goal each while Alessie Mackenzie notched two assists.
  • In goal, Brie Barraco saw all 120 minutes. With eight saves and four goals against, she owns a .667 save percentage and a 2.00 goals against average.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE NITTANY LIONS
  • In three contests against Penn State, the Great Danes have yet to see a win. 
  • Their last meeting came in the fall of 2021. Three freshmen combined for the lone UAlbany goal with Floor de Ruiter tallying the score.
 
ABOUT FAIRFIELD
  • The Stags opened the season with two away games. Visiting Monmouth and Villanova, Fairfield scored two goals but fell in both contests.
  • Agustina Casteluchi scored the first goal of the season against Monmouth while Julianna Kratz tallied the first goal of the game against Villanova.
  • Kratz, Nora Amme, and Carmel Van Dijk have each notched an assist.
  • Payton Rahn sat in goal for each game. Tallying 14 saves, she owns a .700 save percentage and a 3.00 goals against average.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE STAGS
  • UAlbany leads the all-time series, 10-2.
  • The Stags have won the last two meetings, both in 2021 during the 2021 season and the delayed 2020-21 season. Current sophomore Alison Smisdom scored the lone goal in September 2021's contest.
  • The Great Danes' last victory against Fairfield came from an 8-2 win in 2017.
  • The Great Danes took the last meeting, 3-1, in 2015. 
 
UP NEXT
  • The Great Danes will split a second weekend. Starting on the road, UAlbany will visit Colgate on September 9 before hosting Cornell on September 11.
